Small nursery - what to prioritise?

As the title says... We have space for a crib, nursing chair, and then either a changing draw unit or a wardrobe.

What's best to prioritise of the two? Am a first time Mum so I've no idea what to choose!

Changing draw unit for me. Saved me during my recovery from c-section. Mine has draws under it where I kept the main items such as vests, bibs, muslin cloths etc. Wish you all the best

faithtrustandpixiedust · 09/09/2022 16:38

We had a chest of drawers with a changing mat on top for DD, I'd probably prioritise that over hanging space just use drawer dividers to organise them.

piglet81 · 09/09/2022 16:41

Definitely drawers - baby clothes don’t need hanging.

strawberry2017 · 09/09/2022 16:43

Draws.
Wardrobes might look nice when they are full of brand new clothes but the thought of having to hang a small persons clothes up was just not something I could be bothered with!

Marmite27 · 09/09/2022 16:44

wardrobe with shelves in, so more of a cupboard and a cot top changer

20viona · 09/09/2022 16:48

Definitely don't need a chair, I don't know a single person with a nursing chair.

Ifyouknowyouknowyouknow · 09/09/2022 16:51

You probably don’t need a nursing chair, and if you do, it would make more sense for it to go in your room (where the baby will sleep at first) rather than the baby’s room.

And I’d always go for drawers (not draws 🤦‍♀️) for baby stuff as you don’t need to hang their things and the top is useful.

AmyAW · 09/09/2022 16:55

Thanks all - that's quite definitive. Chest of DRAWERS it is....

Personally I would just get a chest of drawers plus a mat for on top for now. See how things pan out before you spend money ... mine never slept in the cot and I fed them lying down in bed at night (on the sofa in the daytime)

tealandteal · 09/09/2022 17:00

You probably won’t use the nursing chair in the babies room for the first 6 months, I have mine in my room at the moment. I also haven’t changed the baby in their room, I have a change mat in the lounge and our en-suite for nighttime. I would wait until the baby is sleeping in there.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 09/09/2022 17:02

Baby in your room for ages I wouldn’t bother with anything yet tbh just see what will work once the baby is here! We had some ideas and then once our daughter was born we were like oh totally don’t need that etc 🙈

LongTailedWinterBird · 09/09/2022 17:02

We had the world's smallest nursery for our 1st baby but managed to squeeze in everything we needed. We had: a Tutti Bambini space saver convertible cot; an IKEA Hemnes chest of drawers (on top of which we had changing mat); a nappy bin and a very slim basic IKEA shelving unit - we removed some shelves and replaced them with 2 hanging rails (for a few jackets and dresses), and popped little storage boxes on the remaining shelves. I had a stool in there too - not a comfortable nursing chair by any means, but okay for a quick night feed and somewhere to perch when she needed company to fall asleep!

@Ifyouknowyouknowyouknow - did you really just correct the OP's spelling?!

redferrari · 09/09/2022 17:03

We did a cot top changer and a small wardrobe with drawers. You do get foldable changing tables I think which are great for space saving.

AmyAW · 09/09/2022 17:09

@LongTailedWinterBird Oooh thank you. Our space is tiny so I'll try those out.

Crib was a total waste of time, money and space for me. LO ended up co-sleeping in our room or Moses basket. Biggest regret for me. Otherwise I'd say a wardrobe with fitted drawers inside and shelving. I folded most of my things but definitely needed hanging space for coats and once the newborn phase passed (super quick) that hanging space is for my now toddlers coats, jackets, shirts etc, and the rest are all still folded.

Also never used a changing space, just put a mat wherever I needed and changed throughout the house.

GreenRainbowSun · 09/09/2022 17:16

I wouldn't bother getting any furniture for a separate nursery until the baby arrives and you work out how you want to parent. Perhaps chest of drawers etc for storage if you need space to put stuff but not anything else.

They should be in with you for at least 6 months, In my case we ended up with baby with us for a few years...we did changes on a mat on the bed or lounge floor. I found breastfeeding more comfy on bed not in a chair.

NewYorkLassie · 09/09/2022 17:26

Unless your baby sleeps through from 6 months when they go in their own room then a chair will most certainly be useful!

you need drawers rather than hanging space.

Ifyouknowyouknowyouknow · 09/09/2022 17:37

@LongTailedWinterBird yep I really did. Hope that helps.

magd2901 · 09/09/2022 19:10

I loved my nursing chair- it was great for supporting my back when feeding. Out of drawers or wardrobe, definitely go drawers- much more use.
