Constant nausea, it’s so grim!

Hi
I’m 7+1 with my 2nd DC. I’ve not been sick (yet) but have awful nausea and food aversions. Because I can’t eat a proper dinner, I wake up starving at 2am and I’m then up for 2 hours. By the time the alarm goes off at 7am I’m knackered. Being tired means I feel more nauseous, then I can’t eat as much… it’s a vicious cycle!!

With DC1 I was vomiting by this point. I “only” have nausea this time but it’s all day and awful!!

also when I do eat I can only stomach carbs and a little bit of cheese. Managed an egg a few days ago. No protein yesterday but did manage 3 chicken nuggets today.

im worried as I had GD with DC1 and I know eating lots of carbs is going to put me at high risk for GD again, but I feel so awful it’s all I can manage.

it’s so much worse on days when I’m working in the office as I can’t nap at lunch time. On WFH days it’s slightly better as a nap helps the tiredness which in turn helps the nausea.

anyone have any advice or words of wisdom?

It is so incredibly grim - I am going though the same thing and I am absolutely hating life. Can't think about anything else other than hope for some respite... I have a newfound respect for all the mums out there who have gone through any type of morning sickness. It is horrendous!

Anyway, I have been trying a few things that seem to take the edge off - mediation (headspace has a pregnancy course), medication (get something prescribed) and generally trying to be distracted and engaged in something (TV, conversation, etc)

Best of luck and hope you are able to find some relief soon xxx

I'm feeling nauseas all day too but I don't think it's as bad as you, I can eat but I feel sick after and I have loads of aversions. My last pregnancy had brief flashes of nausea over a few days and it was gone. This is tough. The only thing that helps is fresh air for me, getting out for a good brisk walk. Good luck!

ShuffleCase · 08/09/2022 21:23

@caropriscilla do you think a GP would prescribe when I’m not actually being sick? I suspect I have that
to look forward to, but hadn’t considered going to
the gP for nausea.

Yes definitely - I've just been prescribed medication despite not being actually sick. Some women have higher tendencies to vomit vs others but the constant nausea alone is enough to get something prescribed. Don't suffer without trying to get some help!!

MichelleScarn · 08/09/2022 21:27

Same boat here! Only don't feel sick when eating so am piling on the weight!

Krakinou · 09/09/2022 04:04

Can you ask to work from home continuously until you feel better? My boss agreed to this and I just emailed HR and told them I wouldn’t be coming to the office on days I felt ill. Here (Spain) the law states that work has to make reasonable adjustments.

The nausea/hunger cycle is awful though. I hope you feel better soon. I mainly ate cereal and vegetable soup. It got much better at 13 weeks and feels like a distant memory now. Good luck! I hope you feel better soon.

ChagSameachDoreen · 09/09/2022 06:34

Don't suffer. Ask your GP for anti-nausea meds like Cyclizine.

iloveyankeecandle · 09/09/2022 06:39

Speak to your gp. They should prescribe something for you

Bananas52 · 09/09/2022 07:12

Currently pregnant, nausea was 24 hours a day this time round and was waking me because I felt so rough. In the first 7-8 weeks I only vomited a couple of times but the GP prescribed meds, and although I would still feel nauseous, it was no longer round the clock. Definitely contact your GP!

MichelleScarn · 09/09/2022 08:24

@Bananas52 when did they give you them? Actually want to cry this morning with how I feel, exhausted as couldn't sleep last night. Am 7+5. I'd Actually welcome the non stop vomiting of last time as at least got some relief!

ShuffleCase · 09/09/2022 08:32

This morning I’ve managed 2 ginger biscuits and some
grapes. Couldn’t stomach my usual tea. Tried a sip of a kids smoothie but it turned my stomach. Had a few sips of water.

so I have managed something and I haven’t actually been sick. Can’t manage anything else, or I honestly would be sick.

is this bad enough to ask GP for meds? I’m just not sure.

Im worried about going to dr to ask for medication as last time I was really I’ll with a sinus infection and I asked for medication the dr refused saying it’s best not to take any medication when pregnant and left me with a awful infection for weeks. It’s really put me off going to drs.

Sorry to hear it’s got you as well OP! I’m currently signed off work with hyperemesis… 9+4 and being sick at least 4 times a day, up at night to be sick once or twice as well.

It may sound counter intuitive but I’ve been starving myself out for a couple of hours so I vomit. After vomiting I feel better and can keep some food/drink down without the bad nausea.

Try sipping fizzy drinks and eating dry, crumbly foods like digestive biscuits, toast, crackers etc.

Also definitely investigate meds.

it’s really horrible, I feel for you.

rosemarycait96 · 09/09/2022 20:00

Definitely go to your GP! I have emetophobia and freaked out as soon as I started feeling sick at 5 weeks. The nausea was 24/7 and totally debilitating. The only thing worse than eating was NOT eating, so I just crammed carbs all day. It was grim.

I really emphasised how grim it was to the GP and luckily they agreed. First put me on cyclizine (an antihistamine, it was useless) and then I asked for something stronger so got prochlorperazine and it was MAGIC. It worked immediately and I felt a lot better.

It took until 16 weeks for me to be able to survive without the meds, mind!

Other things that may help:
Peppermint tea all day everyday
Eat something as soon as you wake up (like a rich tea or cracker), before you even take your head off the pillow
Lemon water
Anything fizzy
Lie down on your side. I work from home, and spent most time between meetings lying sideways on the sofa
Peppermint or ginger anti-sickness bonbons - A brand called Myrtle and Maud do them and the are utter life savers, I still use them at 17 weeks
Sea bands round your wrists, wear them 24/7 and they can take the edge off

I really feel for you, it's so unpleasant.

ShuffleCase · 10/09/2022 09:29

Ok after an awful 24 hours I’ve decided to phone the dr on Monday to see if I can get some medication. I can’t manage another month of this. It’s hideous. Feel sick if I eat, feel sick if I don’t eat. Wonder what the doc will give me.

thanks for all the advice, it makes me feel ok about going to the dr and not so pathetic at not being able to cope with this!!

re people saying WFH all the time, I don’t want to tell my boss until I’m further along as he has finally let me work on a new project and I know they need someone on it that will be staying long term so I reckon if I told
him he’d move me onto more boring work to give one of the other team members (a man no doubt!) the project, since they’d be able to offer more stability/continuity.

@ShuffleCase glad to see you're going to speak to your GP. Don't be fobbed off, constant nausea is debilitating (I know, I'm still medicated at nearly 34 weeks!). I did get a bit of sickness but mostly for me it was the constant nausea.

If the first meds you are prescribed don't work, don't hesitate to go back for others. I found this website useful: www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/help/treatments/

Hopefully it'll pass, but the Hyperemesis thread on here is full of support if you need it.

MichelleScarn · 10/09/2022 18:45

I tried gp yest and was told not being sick often enough yet to merit anti emetics. Seeing midwife on Thurs so hopefully they'll be better.
What I've found I can stomach (well so far today!) Is old school bovril, not too hot and just sipping seems to stay down!
