What happens when you’re diagnosed with gestational diabetes?

As the title says really, what happens if you get diagnosed with gestational diabetes after a glucose tolerance test in pregnancy? I’m having one tomorrow because baby’s abdominal circumference is off the scale. I don’t have any risk factors but have been feeling quite rough for the last few weeks and have had a few of the symptoms.

if I have it will they tell me straightaway? Will I have to go back into hospital? I’m going away for work on Monday, will I have to go to a hospital in a different city or will they just get me to see my GP or midwife in a week or two? I really have no idea and am panicking a bit now!

I can tell you what happened for me. I got the results the date after the glucose test and my midwife referred me immediately to the specialist diabetic midwife at the hospital. 2 working days later I had an appointment at the hospital to get the testing kit and have a discussion about diet etc.

I would suggest checking with your midwife what the process is in your local area.

What happened with me is I got a phone call with the results the day after the test. I then went back to the hospital for an appointment 2 days later with a specialist diabetes midwife. She gave me my monitor and talked me through how to change my diet etc x

This is fresh for me, just been diagnosed at 30+4 so a day or two ago. I got a phone call off the diabetic midwife to say my result come back as having GD around a week and a half-two weeks after my GTT (which was fine by the way, just long) she booked me an appointment at my hospital to have a demonstration of how to test my own bloods throughout the day.

i went the hospital for appointment and they were really good, gave me a monitor, some test strips and tiny needles to test my blood sugar levels at home over a few weeks, I have to test before meals one day, and an hour after meals the following day and alternate the two. She then said to keep doing this and they will book me in again in around 3 weeks time to look at the results and see how it goes from there. If I’m unable to control my blood sugars through diet then it will go to metformin tablets. She then took me next door to see the dietician who gave some really helpful tips and stuff and I was sent home.

any questions let me know :)

Reading with interest because it happened to me (but not in the UK so probably very different).

Tuesday - blood test
Wednesday - results & referral, phone call with diabetic educator to make F2F appointment, offered appointment on Thursday but too busy so had appointment on Friday
Friday - met diabetic educator, got glucose testing kit and instructions to test for 4-5 days before seeing endocrinologist
Wednesday - met endocrinologist, reviewed finger prick tests, prescribed insulin at night only. Instructed to email if results were not within specified range as insulin dosage could be altered via email.
Friday - appointment with dietician to review diet.
Monday - preexisting appointment with midwife
Wednesday - two weeks later - review with endocrinologist

No issues as yet. Very impressed with how quickly it all moves.
