Any recommendations? I love a glass of wine on Friday nights and am looking for any halfway decent substitute.

None of them. They all taste bloody awful.

Sallyh87 · 07/09/2022 23:12

😂 I like you’re succinct honesty @Pinkflipflop85

They're all awful. But when I was pregnant the M&S alcohol free Prosecco I could just about manage.

BIWI · 07/09/2022 23:14

I don't think there are any! In the wine columns in the papers (Guardian/Observer) they regularly review them and have never recommended any of them, I'm afraid!

However, no/low alcohol beers are a lot more successful, if you could contemplate drinking any of those?

NoSquirrels · 07/09/2022 23:15

Fizzy Prosecco substitutes are nicest, like Nosecco etc. There’s no red wine substitutes that aren’t disgusting, and still whites need to be very VERY cold and even then taste too sweet.

0% beer is pretty good, OTOH.

Chuckiegg · 07/09/2022 23:15

The M & S Prosecco is better than I expected!

QueSyrahSyrah · 07/09/2022 23:16

Do you drink Rose OP? The Natureo brand (stocked in Waitrose) has a Rose that is as close to feeling and tasting like real wine that I've ever found.

The co-op do a merlot grape juice that smells nothing at all like wine but is the right texture and 'heaviness' and served in a wine glass might just do the job.

Snugglemonkey · 07/09/2022 23:19

All the wine with no alcohol is vile. I can drink Peroni 0% beer though and have had some ok gin.

Guineapiggiesmalls · 07/09/2022 23:22

Yep, previous poster is right, they’re all rotten. I feel like I tried every single one, and couldn’t face more than a glass of any. Someone did recommend the co-op’s alcohol free red, but topped up with a splash of real red.

if you could be tempted with a gin however, Tesco’s own brand non-alcoholic gin in a tin is quite nice.

Janesdufflecoat · 07/09/2022 23:37

I had a bottle of lower alcohol wine in a restaurant recently by accident (god damn!) that was nice but I haven't been able to find it to buy! Even on line!

I've attached a photo of the bottle!

Good non alcoholic wine
Oblomov22 · 07/09/2022 23:42

I find them all vile. Keep searching for one for dry January. Haven't found one yet.

pimlicoanna · 07/09/2022 23:44

@Janesdufflecoat you can buy it on yourhealthylifeshop.co.uk

pimlicoanna · 07/09/2022 23:46

Anyone looking for an alcohol free beer I honestly think the Brooklyn Beer one is by far the best. It really doesn't have that distinctive alcohol free taste

ColdCottage · 07/09/2022 23:48

None. 0.5% Waitrose cider was just about Ok.

annlee3817 · 08/09/2022 00:08

Eisberg alcohol free fizz is nice, quite dry, always find the other alternatives too sweet. They do a white wine too, but I mix with soda water as it's sweet

Pheepa · 08/09/2022 08:08

Thomson and Scott Noughty sparkling is the best I’ve found. Still not quite right but a nice drink. Especially with a splash of elderflower cordial just to make it a touch richer. It’s not cheap though! I also like Old Mout Pineapple and Raspberry ‘cider’ but it’s more of a soft drink really, but at least a bit different to other things as a change

Babyenroute · 08/09/2022 08:11

I was just coming on to say Noughty! I tried the non alcoholic sparking on a weekend away recently and it surprised me.

TruffleShuffles · 08/09/2022 08:16

I didn’t mind the nosecco rose, wasn’t impressed by the white version. It’s not wine but the best non alcoholic substitute I found was martini, they do a rosso and a blanco and they were lovely over ice.

annlee3817 · 08/09/2022 08:23

Oh and the freixnet zero sparkling is good too, well as good as they can be

i83 · 08/09/2022 08:55

I haven’t found any that are even drinkable to be honest! I manage about 2 sips and that’s it!

Some non-alcoholic beers, largers and ciders are really good. I think the drinks industry has just put a lot more time and development into them, over the wines and proseccos etc.

These are good:

They don’t taste like wine but are something a bit different.

Pinktruffle · 08/09/2022 09:30

Most wines are disgusting. Caleno alcohol free gin and alcohol free rum are really nice. I also recommend Old Mout alcohol free cider

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 08/09/2022 09:33

Wild Idol is quite nice but is a lot of money.
Jukes cordials look like wine I’m the glass though they don’t claim to be wine, I really like them though. Again, expensive.

20viona · 08/09/2022 09:34

If you like beer the no alcohol corona is excellent. I'm 5days pp and can't wait a fizz tonight if I'm finally allowed home from hospital!

bilbodog · 08/09/2022 10:31

If you like gin ive tried both gordons and tanqueray zero alcohol and they are both very good substitutes.

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 08/09/2022 10:33

Cider or beer. Don't do it I wasted so much money and they're all rank.
