Art Class in early Pregnancy

Hi ladies

Some advice please. Im almost 8 weeks. There's an art class starting locally for 90 mins once a week and I'd like to join as I'm new to the area and a little isolated. Its art therapy so not very serious but does involve paint. The teacher informed me the paint was non toxic when I asked about oil paint/solvents, but I don't know if I should, the internet tells me all exposure is potentially harmful.

Has anyone done something like this while pregnant?

I don’t do art classes but I painted my whole house whilst heavily pregnant. Most paint now is water based it’s the oil or solvent based paint (which smells) with the possible problem with inhalation. However, modern paints are far safer that paints from 30/40/50 years ago.

I would imagine at an art class you would be using a tiny amount of paint compared to painting a house.

Thanks! I guess but there's also the aspect of being in early pregnancy which is the worst time for exposure to anything

Wear a mask?

They will be hyper cautious about any toxic stuff from an insurance POV so a mask would be belt-and-braces.

You'll be fine! I'm 24 weeks and still doing my weekly pottery class. If the NHS doesn't advise against it, I'd keep doing it :)

I had my first dc in the middle of my fine art degree. It’s fine go for it and enjoy!

I would be more concerned about whether the general smell sets off nausea. Anything like that would have had me puking in an instant

but the toxicity wouldn’t be a concern for me, as others have said

I would just stay away from cadmium and cobalt paints, etc (there are non-cadmium alternatives). Try not to get much paint on your skin if it is oil or acrylic. Use a mask if you are spray painting. I used water-based oil paints when my older kids were little as I didn't want solvents & fumes about the house.
