Feeling hungover in early pregnancy!

I'm 6 weeks tomorrow and every morning I wake up feeling like I've been on a 4 day party holiday!

Waking up with awful headaches and feeling what I can only describe as foggy. Is this normal?? If it is, when will it pass?

I have had to take two days off work because I cannot seem to get my energy up and get out of bed. (Probably doesn't help that all I want to eat at the moment is Greggs and pizza..)

This is a very wanted pregnancy after 2.5 years of trying so I'm willing to ride the wave! Any advice would be very welcome!

That is what early pregnancy is like unfortunately! It gets better when you go into the second trimester, 6-8 weeks seems to be the peak though, and it may come and go (note loss of symptoms is not usually a sign of miscarriage).

@BertieBotts thank you for your reply! I definitely think I need to suck it up but it's good to hear that it's normal.

Yes, this is very normal! I was lucky to not actually be sick at all, but I felt nauseous a lot and just generally felt like I’d been hit by a truck 😬 The tiredness was unreal. Seems to suddenly hit you out of nowhere. i used to collapse on the sofa straight after work and nap for a couple of hours (take the opportunity to do this in your first pregnancy because it doesn’t happen in second or subsequent pregnancies!)

It does get better, I promise (for most people). I felt great in the second trimester and still felt pretty good in the third trimester; just a little slower and more aches and pains in the hips etc.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

When I describe early pregnancy I always say it is like I was out drinking until 4am, without the fun!

Gem202290 · 01/09/2022 12:10

@waterlego thank you for your reply, it makes me feel a lot better hearing that this is normal!

I also have a deep new found respect for pregnant ladies who already have babies because the tiredness is something else!

I feel like I've got alien vs predator going on inside me at the moment!

I am incredibly grateful that I managed to conceive so I'm going to cut myself some slack.

Yep I posted a similar question when I was in the first trimester. I felt like I had been to a three day festival drinking alcohol with no sleep, with a bit of jet lag thrown in. I was so groggy and felt rotten, I actually went to the GP thinking there was something wrong but all the tests came back fine and it was just normal pregnancy symptoms. In the end I started having one caffeinated drink a day after cutting it out completely and that made me feel slightly more human.
I'm feeling much better now in the second trimester, it does get better albeit slowly!

Gem202290 · 01/09/2022 12:12

@Bumbers I'm still hiding it from my work colleagues so my plan is for them to think I've become a sudden party animal 😂. Im the most boring one there so this might be difficult!

@Bebbanburg2507 thank you for replying this is honestly making me feel a lot less anxious!

I also have found that having one relatively weak coffee in the morning helps to clear my headache slightly.

If only we could have a hair of the dog!

Yes, I felt like this until 20 weeks unfortunately, though the peak was around weeks 7-10 and it did ease as time went on. No fun at all! I survived on beige food. I felt much worse if I was tired (e.g. Fridays were worse than Mondays) so definitely rest as much as you can.

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 01/09/2022 12:17

This was me the whole way through with my third! The day after delivery was such a dream - waking up and that horrible groggy feeling had finally gone. Pregnancy is no picnic! Congratulations and hope it eases for you soon.

Thank you for your replies! I think I need to remember I'm growing an entire human!

Did anyone find that any particular vitamins helped? I'm taking a few including strong vitamin D and obviously folic acid.

I also ate really well the first week I found out but that quickly went downhill! I'm worried my bad eating is not helping with my energy levels 😬

Definitely agree with @Numbat2022, the more tired I am the worse the sickness/hungover feeling. I have been taking Fridays off work as just can’t function as the week goes on, I need the rest. I’m now into week 16 and although I have more good days I still feel awful the majority of the time, I am hibernating and just carry a bucket round the house with me. Like you this is a very much wanted pregnancy so don’t want to moan but jeez, it’s so draining! It’s not until you’re pregnant that people tell you how awful it can be. 😂

ChangeHtotheP · 01/09/2022 12:24

Also just seen the comment you just posted. My midwife said the most important diet you can have when feeling nauseous is anything you can keep down. Best advice someone has given me, and you’ll get plenty from people when they know. You’ll be sick of hearing about ginger in no time. 😂

Gem202290 · 01/09/2022 12:31

@ChangeHtotheP I love sleep anyway so this is very welcomed advice! My mum has also suggested arrowroot biscuits as they're apparently very good for nausea!

I'm still waiting for my first midwives appointment but I am a bit worried to tell them about my current diet!

I'm 7 weeks and feeling rotten too (but a very wanted baby so grateful for positive signs) I think I'm eating more as well to stave off the nausea and feel like I'm putting on loads of weight which isn't supposed to happen in first trimester. Couldn't even imagine going out partying feeling like this, so it would be hard to convince anyone that was the issue :-D
