Scan at 8 weeks

Got a private scan tomorrow at 8+1.

Really don't want an internal scan, but how likely is it to be internal compared to an abdominal scan? What did you have if you had a scan at the same time?

I had one last pregnancy at just under 9 weeks which was abdominal, but now panicking it's too early!

They should be able to get a clear view doing an abdominal one at 8 weeks. I’ve had a few at that gestation and it was fine.

Hiddenvoice · 30/08/2022 19:46

They should have a clear view with an abdominal scan, just drink plenty of water beforehand. I had a scan bang on 8 weeks and it wasn’t internal

Drinking lots of water will help, also it depends on how much weight you carry on your tummy.
I’m a slim size 10 and the amazing NHS sonographers saw baby and a heartbeat at 5+6 transabdominally (early due to previous ectopic).

Thanks all hopefully will be able to have abdominal then!

I will definitely drink lots of water! Although last time at my first scan I drank too much and had to try to 'half empty' my bladder - easier said than done 😂

I booked a private scan at Window to the Womb and if you're less than 10 weeks along they recommend transvaginal scans to get a clearer view etc. You can always refuse of course but I'm not sure how much clarity you'll get with an abdominal scan at 8 weeks xxx

FirstTimeTryer93 · 30/08/2022 20:15

Sorry forgot to mention I was 8 weeks 3 days along and had transvaginal scan. They were very discrete I didn't feel uncomfortable at any point xxx

Hi, I had a scan at what I thought was 8 weeks but was dated 8+3 at the scan. I had abdominal and I'm not the slimmest person. I have had an internal in the past and it was fine. I was sure I would have to have an internal this time but they could see fine with abdominal and heard their little heart beat too. They should be able to see abdominal, good luck 😊

lovesT · 30/08/2022 21:00

I had one for this pregnancy at 7/7 and a half weeks and was all abdominal and they could see the heart beat x

zeromango · 30/08/2022 21:20

You should be fine OP - I had one around 8 weeks on my stomach and could see a little blob and good heartbeat very clearly Smile Good luck! I hope it goes well.

20viona · 30/08/2022 21:24

I had internal at 8 weeks and it was fine good clear picture.
Previous pregnancy had abdominal at 9 weeks and it wasn't that clear.

ChickinMarango · 30/08/2022 21:29

I’d always take internal over external for and early scan as they’re so much clearer (especially at my size 😆). This was my scan at 8w 5 days!

I had a transvaginal scan around 8/9 weeks, it was absolutely fine, not painful or uncomfortable at all if that's what your concerned about.

Pheepa · 30/08/2022 22:08

I had window to the womb and like PP said it would be internal as standard until 10 weeks. They do obviously ask for consent. I was happy to say yes as had had an internal in EPU in a previous pregnancy due to suspected ectopic. There may be other reasons for you not wanting internal but if it’s just a bit of fear please don’t worry, it’s not painful or uncomfortable, sure you’ll be fine once you get your head round someone being down there with a probe! Good luck

Cas112 · 30/08/2022 22:39

Should be fine, anything after 7 weeks

somethingluscious · 31/08/2022 06:03

I have an 8 weeks scan at EPAU on Thursday morning so I think they will have to do it internally. My ovulation date was cycle day 26 so I think I'm almost 2 weeks behind that. When I said that, the midwife replied that they only measure from LMP. I'm quite nervous. They called it a reassurance scan, to me it feels more like a viability scan. The way I think about it, it's just like getting a smear test and by the time you give birth everyone is up in there anyway.

Let us know how you get on!

eatsleeprepeat123 · 31/08/2022 20:12

Had the scan this afternoon! All was ok and it was abdominal so all good!
