Hi - I had this with DD1 - once they were sure the baby wasn't about to arrive I went home - More chance of picking up an infection in hospital than at home.

You may have a slow leak (like a puncture) which means the water can replenish itself - but you need careful monitoring as an outpatient...if they've just left you unmonitored - go back and shout for attention!! I had weekly fetal heart monitoring and a few scans to check the water levels.

The antibiotics are for infection, as once the waters are leaking there is a small hole for possible infection to get through. I also had steroid injections - to bring on the baby's lungs just in case I went into labour (didn't until 34 weeks - i did get an infection - baby fine)

My baby's head was down early on too - think this is quite common - and uncomfortable. I was told not to go swimming, take long baths or have sex as these can increase chances of infection. Basically it was a wait and see.

My top tips would be - Change pad frequently if you're leaking. Keep eye out for yellowy/greeny water leaks - big sign of infection. Don't go too mad on the exercise - loads of strenous activity made my water leak more.

Sorry it's long - hope it helps - feel passionately about this subject as I was sent home twice from hospital when I started to leak and told I was being stupid!
Good luck

My friend experienced this with her first, I was surprised they let her out TBH but apparently it seems some small ruptures can self heal and indeed that wouldbe the case with her, as her LO was born at 39 weeks all well.

FWIW my babs has been head down now for a good few weeks (I am 30 weeks) so that's not abnormal, however a history of early birth does warrant more care.

thanks ladies. i really was expecting them to give me the injections to help babys lungs develop but they didnt. so now its a waiting game, and no further appointments for check ups or anthing just to keep my appointments to see midwife at doctors which i do every 4 weeks. x

no experience, just sending you hugs.
My instincts would be to pester them for more info on exactly what's likely to happen in the next few weeks & more regular checks.
Take care and rest rest rest.

I second Slim22 - do pester them for more than just the midwife checks. I'm really surprised too that they didn't give you the steroid jab for the lungs. Keep an eye on everything and don't be afraid of hounding them if you're concerned! And rest....ah, yes...I vaguely remember what that was x

i had this last week at 37+2 days- was kept in for 2 nights to be monitored but scan showed fluid in normal limits so medically cannot say they have ruptured!!!

Was sent home with no antibiotics- doc said as medically there is enough fluid its not worth having them, and kept asking was i sure i did not wet myself!"!!!! what a joke!!!!!

I am now 38+5 and still waiting-

totally understand your worries about this i feel the same and i am classed as term!!!

hopefully not too long to wait now-

I hope all goes well for you

My waters went at 30 weeks when i was pregnant with my daughter. I was given the steroids and antibiotics immediatly and told i'd probably go in to labour within a couple of days. I had to stay in hospital and be monitered twice daily. I managed not to go in to labour for 10 days and my daughter was born at 4lb8oz and perfectly healthy but completly squashed and bruised because of lack of cushioning she also then got pretty bad jaundice. She's 3 now and just started nursery.. she's fine

good luck and if i were you i'd definatly ask for them to moniter you daily. if they wont i'd by a decent thermometer and keep and eye on it, tempreture rise is one of the first signs of infection.

I had this with my first pg.. didnt know my waters had had gone I was measuring small for dates, at 28wks measuring 21weeks.. at the scan it was shown that fluid had been leaking.. deepest patch was just under 1cm. Suspected waters had gone 7weeks prevoius (this also tied into me having a high fever one night.. on and off theloo all night weeing) as baby had dolicopholous.. (sp) I was then kept in for monitoring. I had higher vaginal swabs weekly, bloods taken weekly, twice weekly scans, one doppler one growth. DD was footling breech. I was also given dexamethazone steroids.

At 36weeks it was deemed that they couldnt keep the baby in anylonger.. (nothing to do with fluid levels as these remained low.. but my placentahad stopped functioning properly) so all in all I spent.. 8weeks in hospital till I had her via c-section, (they wouldnt let me go natural as it would have been too dangerous for dd contractions would have been too much pressure on her head due to the dolicopholous..)

That was in 1996 all is well with her and has been since birth. My other two pg went by without a hitch..

Good luck.
