Anyone not being offered a 12 week scan?

My doctor has just informed me that my first scan will be my 20 week one. I am fairly horrified, as I have a MMC phobia, and surely it's important to have some kind of early scan? I was completely surprised and didn't even question it, but now I'm not amused.

I'm already paying for one private scan as I want to request flexible working, and want to ensure everything's ok before I tell work. However, I didn't exactly budget for paying for 2!

Anyone else been in this situation? Incidentally, I'm in West Sussex, so if anyone knows if it's normal in this trust, that would be interesting too...

McDreamy - You are following me. We left L-on-O in July 2003 to go to Akrotiri....then where did you go and when......Tell me you weren't at L-on-O?????

Oh and the Med Centre where dh worked (a bit) lent us a doppler so we could hear dd when we wanted. Not sure I would do it now I know what I know but all was ok...

We arrived in L-on-O August 2003 when DD was 6 months old. Left there to go to Akrotiri in Jan 05 - how bizarre!!!

McDreamy · 22/01/2008 20:34

Now this is really strange because my DD also worked at the Med Centre!!! Did your DH work at the Med centre in Aki or TPMH?

McDreamy · 22/01/2008 20:35

Sorry DH not DD!!!

I am in Hackney and you get routine scans at 12 weeks and 20 weeks. I am amazed how differently the care and facilities available are in other parts of the country.

If you see a heartbeat at 8 weeks, that is as good as reaching 12 weeks (without scan) i.e. your risk of adverse outcome is about the same. So your 8 week should suffice. I had an 8 week dating scan last time round and then wasn't offered the standard 12 week one, even though I have previously had a stillborn baby and pregnancy is utterly horrific for me. I did have growth scans 4 weekly from 20 weeks though.

Horrified to hear about Oxfordshire having a scanning waiting list of that magnitude. Guess where I am.
