Only 29+4 and I’m already sick and tired of GD! I got told I have it 3 weeks ago and these 3 weeks have been the longest ever! I want bubble tea sooo badly right now (passion fruit tea with blueberry boba) but I can’t have it. I want pizza but I can’t have it. I want dumplings 🥺 I’m already so sick and tired of eating the same chicken/veg, fish/veg for dinner every night that I physically feel sick thinking about it. I miss my orange juice. I know this is all for the betterment of me and my baby but the next 8-10 weeks feel like a lifetime away! Please can you guys give me some yummy meal ideas, snack ideas and drink ideas? It would mean so much to me. 🥺

I’m so so glad I’m at least able to have OPPO ice cream without it at all affecting my blood sugars (tested 1 and 2 hours later) so that’s good. I actually feel like it helps to keep my blood sugars in the normal range whenever I eat that ice cream, as crazy as that sounds!

Meal and drink ideas please guys! I feel like I’m never full no matter what I eat because previously, my meals used to be so carb based. Sometimes when I test (usually after I wake up) my levels are actually low. I had a sleep in this morning and woke up at midday, my fasting level was 3.4! What should I do when my blood levels get low? Eat anything, or eat something sugary? I haven’t had an appointment with the dietitian yet and the diabetic midwife and the hospital wasn’t much help tbh. Sorry for the rant!

You can have some of those things in small quantities, But then eat a load of cheese or nuts or chicken with it to balance the sugar overload or go for a walk xx gestational diabetes fb group was my life saver

dreamerkr · 29/08/2022 18:48

I was craving dumplings today like I have been for the whole of the pregnancy, but I wasn’t sure if a small side of steamed dumplings would be okay to eat with a main of chicken steak and veggies? I don’t want to take any risks 🥺
I will join the Facebook group today. 😫

You're absolutely allowed to have some carbs, and if you find that you can't have any carbs or you go to high but to get a reading of 3.4 shows you probably aren't eating enough and I'll guarantee that you'll be producing ketones in your wee at midwife...

I couldn't get my morning one down so I was put on metformin. But any kind of exercise I would be really low! X don't beat yourself up x

Teenprobs · 29/08/2022 18:55

Sorry tailed off mid sentence if you can't eat anything or are too high when you're being sensible you might just need meds

dreamerkr · 29/08/2022 19:15

@Teenprobs thank you so much! It’s the other way around for me tbh. I have gone over twice but that’s because both times, I was invited out for dinner so my reading was around 8. Normally, I’m within the normal limits at all times but I’ve gone under (3.4, 3.7) twice too. And you’re right about the ketones. At every midwife appointment I have either 2+ or 3+ ketones in my urine. I do drink a lot of water but I probably am not eating enough although I really am trying.

When you were taking metformin, did you still have to be so strict with your diet? I know nothing, I’m so sorry

I got to a stage where I knew what I could eat and not spike. I got reduced sugar chocolate and I would pair it with a fat or a protein for good measure. I missed Coke, cereal, bread but I could handle small amounts such as single slice of bread with scrambled eggs and lots of butter for Instance. The diabetic nurse will ring you and let you know how you're doing xx

dreamerkr · 29/08/2022 21:05

Thank you so much. Which reduced sugar chocolate was this? I got 90% dark chocolate the other day and that was so disgusting I threw it away straight away 😂

I found this website really helpful. There is a Facebook group connected to them as well.
www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/

I remember having nain chocolate biscuits with full fat cream.

Angel delight became a firm favourite, again I think you may have to add a little cream instead of milk, but that with some fruit (possibly blueberries) worked nicely.

I also think I did a pizza but the base was a wholewheat wrap.

Sorry it's so rubbish and boring, don't forget to pack your favourite treat in your hospital bag as you are allowed it once baby is out! (At least that was the case 4 years ago).

Waitwhat23 · 29/08/2022 21:18

Agree with above - the GD website saved me when I had GD and I still make loads of the recipes. My favourites are - the nutella, korma, Victoria sponge, chocolate cheesecake and ganache are my favourites.

Don't bother with 90% chocolate - anything above 70% should be fine.

whoami24601 · 29/08/2022 21:24

I loved Apple slices with tons of peanut butter. Eggs are fab - boiled egg with cheese soldiers is a good one for protein and fats. It seems like ages now but it's just a few weeks really. As soon as baby was born I was fine so I lived on cake and toast for the first 3 months to make up for it 🤣

Expectingfirstbaby · 29/08/2022 21:28

Seeded sourdough with peanut butter and a cup of tea 😍

minipie · 29/08/2022 21:33

Snack ideas: Nuts, salami, cheese, hard boiled eggs (with mayo if you like it), avocado with salt and chilli flakes.

All high fat but luckily high fat is fine with GD! In fact can help reduce spikes, so if you do have carbs, have fat with it.

Try following Glucose Goddess on insta, she has great tips for avoiding spikes. Eg always eat the fruit/veg part of the meal first.

It says in my GD booklet where I have to record blood glucose levels that if I go above the target then I should contact the diabetic nurse or midwife. My levels have been high twice in the last 10 days or so, should I call them or should I call if they’re high more often than this? They didn’t explain anything at the hospital.

I used to have chopped strawberries and whipped cream and grate some dark chocolate on top or sliced apple, whipped cream, cinnamon and crushed nuts. They were surprisingly ok when I was desperate.
Peanuts and popcorn mixed together was nice.
The maternity hospital I went to was so crap. They didn’t give us anything to self test (no budget for it) so they just gave a really strict diet to follow and once a week, took fasting bloods in the morning clinic. Then eat some all bran (which has fucking sugar in it but try telling them that!) and get more blood taken. If your blood sugar was high they called you on the phone in the afternoon. The clinic used to get badly delayed and once I was fasting for 15 hours when heavily pregnant, started seeing spots and almost fainted. My blood sugars were only slightly high three times. Once when I told the midwife I was hungry she gave me a filthy look and said It won’t kill you. I was starving, tired and felt like shit nearly all the time and the midwives kept giving me shit because the weight was falling off me. If I ever get pregnant again, there’s no way I’m going along with that. If you are hungry, eat! Don’t go mad, but eat an extra snack or bring it up at next appointment. I know, it’s hard. Good luck x

SheilasLemonade · 29/08/2022 21:57

I'd just double check the Oppo by doing a spike test to make sure.

For sweet things, I made GD friendly brownies. I also got away with frozen fruit, alpro yoghurt and full fat squirty cream, and low sugar angel delight.

pjani · 29/08/2022 22:00

You should call them. At my hospital, third high reading could mean metformin so I would read the website and join the Facebook group and change your diet fast. Definitely don’t eat the dumplings! That was terrible advice. High fat, high protein, low carb worked for me. I tried other things too, apple cider vinegar (gross) and exercise after eating but mostly it was diet. I would have 5 small meals a day, pretty much the same things at the same time.

I also got high readings early on till I figured out what I could tolerate. GD is so rough and I feel for you but grit your teeth and you can do it! One day at a time.

pjani · 29/08/2022 22:02

Oh and my go to treat was blueberries and chopped green apple (carbs but for whatever reason the easiest to tolerate) with cream and mixed nuts (got surprisingly fond of walnuts).

PinkButtercups · 29/08/2022 22:09

I had GD in my first pregnancy and now have GD again (22+2) with twins. Got tested this time at 16 weeks. I'm on metformin x2 at the minute but probably will need to be upped.

I eat what I want within reason you don't have to be so strict on your diet you can have treats!

Any high numbers my diabetic midwife wants to know about. Just call them to be sure.

I took metformin AND insulin and also had to be strict with the diet. You can just have it really had and be so sensitive to it. It sucks but i defo had a treat a week and walked it off afterwards. Walk for a good 30-40 mins quite fast and the sugars come right down.x good luck, will he so worth it :-)

That sounds a bit dramatic (from them not you) They just looked at mine when I went in, it's really not worth a call if just slightly over but yes it's it's crazy high

70billionthnamechange · 29/08/2022 22:16

One more thing... avocado choc mousse.:: sounds minging but look it up (sorry am about to sleep or would send link) it's really good and I still have now even tho I'm not diabetic any more
