Diagnosed with IBS while pregnant

Hi
Im currently 15 weeks pregnant with my second. My little girl is only 9 months. My GP thinks I have IBS and I am inclined to agree. The frequency is really ramped up when I am pregnant. I get really bad stomach cramps followed by diarrhoea. This can last between an hour and two hours. The link gets so bad that I feel like I’m going to pass out. As I’m pregnant, the GP said I cannot have anti spasmodic drugs (fair enough) and I can’t try a FODMAP (elimination) diet as I’m pregnant. I get the impression I just have to put up with it. Has anyone else had a similar experience please?

Hey OP

15 weeks pregnant and have IBS-C diagnosis for many years (basically i get constipated really quickly and experience severe muscle spasm pains) . Mine was well controlled with high fibre diet and buscopon would help with muscle spasm. Since 9 weeks pregnant i have been struggling, the cramps are really painful at times i would assume they are miscarriage cramps (anxious mind). Recently ive added more fibre to my diet, drinking prune juice and more water, do brisk walks everyday and found this has made it bit more bearable.

Its a horrible experience as pregnancy messes with the digestive system. The best advice i can give is up your water intake, light exercise and stay away from foods that trigger your symptoms or have less fibre food. It takes time to figure out these trigger foods, but if you are already noticing certain foods make it worse then to reduce or cut them out. Sorry cannot be any further help.. Wishing you a good recovery and pregnancy 💕

Even without being pregnant a lot of people tend to just be left to get on with IBS unfortunately. Make a food and pooing diary and see if you can identify any triggers.

I have IBS D and unfortunately it does seem to be a case of just get on with it. Mines got so much worse since getting pregnant. 😩 luckily the pain isn't too bad, it's just the constant need to go to the loo, particularly when I've just eaten a big meal. My only tip is hot water bottles, lovely warm baths and peppermint tea. It should hopefully get a bit better after the birth! Xx

Top foods to increase fibre in your diet, wholewheat bread, pasta, cereals, bananas, popcorn, broccoli, beans and lentils, jacket potatoes with skins.

Hi.. I'm 5 weeks and have been having cramps that feel like period cramps but they are so much more painful. They come in waves of about 10 to 40 minutes.

Sometimes I will just sit on the toilet and bear down and maybe some mucus comes out as a wet fart.. sometimes a small poop. Sometimes nothing.. not even gas.

Is this IBS?

I went to the ER and they said my pregnancy is fine and sent me home..
