Hi KayalSuku

I am going through a similar thing at the moment - am on holiday at the moment in New Zealand, 12wks +5 and meant to fly back today - but ended up spending the day in hospital as last night I had on-off bleeding and cramps (fresh, no clots).

I am petrified I am miscarrying - I am rattling around my mate's house over here without my partner and my mate has gone to Oz on holiday and I am not allowed to fly whilst I'm bleeding. Don't know a soul in Auckland and I have got to wait until tomorrow or Thursday for a scan, so not sure when I'm gonna get home for some much-needed support.

If it is any help (it has been to me a bit) I went on the internet earlier and read that only 50% of women who experience bleeding during pregnancy go on to miscarry; also, only 5% of pregnancies end in miscarriage if a heartbeat has already been detected (I had a scan at 8 weeks as well as I had bleeding then too which then stopped)!!

Call your GP as soon as you wake up and get your fears allayed - there are lots of reasons why you could be bleeding, miscarriage being only one. Theres someone thinking of you and going through the same thing at the moment (even if it is the other side of the world!)

Hi again KayalSuku

Thought you'd like to know I had my scan today - baby alive and well and literally kicking - the bleeding is because of a low-lying placenta.

Hope you have equally good news...

luvaduck · 23/01/2008 01:53

bleeding doesn't always equal miscarriage. the figure is much lower than 50% - the majority of women that bleed go on to have normal pregnancies. esp if its painless. def worth getting it checked out.
anecdotally i bled on and off until 18 weeks including a massive bleed at 17 weeks and have a perfect ds.
sorry this is short need to go to bed but just wanted to send some calming words

How are you guys getting on? I'm 7 weeks and am having on and off bleeding. Had normal scan with visible heartbeat but am not sure if the stress of not knowing when the bleeding is going to start again is doing me any good. Trying to be calm but have been bleeding lightly for the last few days... . No more scans booked but may call EPAU again.

woodchip · 30/01/2008 13:35

try not to worry too much about the bleeding. i bled with all 3 of mine. the first 2 were in the early weeks up until around 9 - 10 weeks, the 3rd no blood til 23rd week, then bleeding on and off all the way til 36 week CS birth. This one was due to placenta previa grade 4, and although, things were very much touch and go for him (will spare you the gory details!), everything was fine in the end. Just wanted you to know that bleeding in pg is so much more common than we realise and may not always mean the 'worst'. Hope the rest of the pregnancies for you all go well!

crabby · 30/01/2008 21:05

Thanks woodchip. Can I ask a TMI question please? How much/how often did you bleed? Sorry to be gory but I wonder if everyone else bled a spot once and then that was it... Paranoia I am afraid rules supreme.

KayalSuku · 31/01/2008 07:57

do not worry please...
i got my first bleeding on 2nd of my 6th week. and again on 4th of my 6th week this time 4/5 times,, bit more also.........worried ...rushued to EPU did a scan and everything was fine... doctor advised me to take rest.........i am in complete rest.....everything seems to be ok..... i am going for my next scan on 2-feb... will update u later.........no worries again......take complete rest

Sorry crabby! Only just noticed there was a response after my post! About the bleeding, first baby at around 6 weeks, it started off brownish, then pink, then red, it was like a light period, couple of days on then few days off and back on again, very worrying at the time, but it was fine in the end. Second baby, very similar to first, but started around week 7 to about 10 if i remember, was still worried but thought as id been there before, i could do it again! Third, different kettle of fish, proper bleeding like period, which was 23 weeks in and I had to go to hospital where it was confirmed placenta previa grade 4 (completely covering cervix) and had to stay there for 13 weeks, during which time i had some very heavy bleeds, clots and all (you did ask!) but the little fellow hung on in there! They like to keep you going with placenta previa as long as possible, but you can haemorrage so scans twice weekly, but each day baby is still inside you is better than his fight outside the womb to survive. Anyway, i had a GA and CS at 36 weeks, and then lost loads of blood so had 2 transfusions and baby had one too. BUT it is important to know that he is the most fit and healthy little boy you could ever meet. Please try not to worry, I know its hard not to, but lots of people do have bleeding and quite heavy too, and also have healthy little ones at the end. Lots and lots of luck to you all.

Weirdly, placenta praevia (as demonstrated by your story) is mush worse than a bit of bleeding early on and can have disasterous consequences but freaks me out less as at least I can understand the pathology behind it. Bleeding early on when no one has a clue why is too inexplicable for my brain which likes to have things tidied away into little boxes.

I suppose parenthood is going to involve me not being able to have things so metaphoricaly tidy as there are so many uncertainties!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It is reassuring as it sounds (hoepfully only the early bleeding) similar to mine. Glad to know your kids are all well. And thanks again.
