What’s a reasonable amount of weight to gain in pregnancy? Im 22weeks and pre pregnancy I was 9.5 stone and BMI 20, I’ve gained a stone already, is this too much? It feels too much too soon 🤷‍♀️

Anyone mind sharing their weight gains 😬

I put on 12lbs in the first trimester and 11 in the second, I was so unwell I had to just eat what I could to stop the nausea. I'm 31 weeks now and have put on 26lbs. I talked to the midwife because I was worried it was too much but she wasn't bothered

Lucy304 · 26/08/2022 19:33

Hi @Jaaxe. I gained 4.5 stone in my first pregnancy. Felt exhausted so stopped going to the gym, and snacked loads as I was constantly hungry. I felt so uncomfortable towards the end and also found it a real struggle to get it off after DD was born. Promised myself I wouldn't let it happen again but just 7 weeks in to this pregnancy and once again I'm knackered and keep reaching for the biscuit tin 😩.
Tbh I think the NHS website says ideal weight gain is between 1.5 - 2.5 stone so your stone at just over halfway through sounds fine. Wishing you a healthy rest of your pregnancy.

I was followed by my French OB/Gyn and in France, they really tell you off if you put excessive weight on. Pregnant women are not care for by GP or midwives but OB/Gyn. Their rule is 1kg/month

Baby 1 : 11kgs
Baby 2 : 9.5 kgs
Baby 3 : 9 kgs

Back to my life long weight and BMI of 19.2

It is not so much the weight that matters but the food you eat. Prioritise plants, whole grains, legumes, and ditch the ultra processed foods. Don't buy crisps, take away, and other snacks.

You haven't put on too much weight. Congratulations on your baby!!

2ndTimeRound90 · 26/08/2022 19:37

I gained 3 stone 2lb in my second pregnancy and am just about back to my pre pregnancy weight now (15 weeks pp) without any dieting or exercise, just bf and dealing with 2 young kids! I wouldn't worry about your weight gain so far

bakewellbride · 26/08/2022 19:41

I gained 3 stone in my first perfectly healthy pregnancy (9 -12 stone so a similar starting point to you). The first stone happened within the first 10 weeks then things slowed down a bit - you have absolutely nothing to worry about!

In my second pregnancy I gained a total of 4 stone (9-13 stone) and again that was another healthy and happy pregnancy.

Weight gain is natural, normal and healthy.

Nejnej2 · 26/08/2022 19:51

I'm 26 weeks tomorrow and have gained just over a stone from my pre-pregnancy weight (and had lost a bit in the first tri due to nausea and food aversions).
Even though baby is still small, remember your blood volume has increased and you've grown an entire new organ to support baby!

Loulou1712 · 26/08/2022 20:03

I think there's guidance on the NHS website about recommended weight gains depending on your starting weight.
This is my 3rd pregnancy and I've actually hardly gained anything on any pregnancy due to sickness.
If you imagine at full time baby weight 7-8lb, they say placenta and fluid etc weighs about the same, plus extra fat storage, bigger boobs and blood volume explains the average recommendation of gaining around 1.5stone, but a good amount of that will be during trimester 3 x

allfurcoatnoknickers · 26/08/2022 20:06

I'm in the US - Manhattan specifically where they watch your weight like a hawk and weigh you at every appointment. If you start at a healthy BMI, they recommend you gain 25-35lbs. I put on 28lbs, most of it in my third trimester, so it felt very sudden.

Labgirl123 · 26/08/2022 20:09

I put on exactly 1stone for the whole pregnancy

20viona · 26/08/2022 20:10

I'm 36 weeks and have gained approx a stone. Babies being delivered next week so hopefully will be half a stone lighter this time next week!

Allgoodthings1 · 26/08/2022 20:28

I gained over 3 stone. I didn’t really put on loads on bulk anywhere though, I think it was mainly all baby and some in my face etc. a year on and I’ve lost 4 stone! Don’t worry about the weight, enjoy yourself, it’s the one time you can and the only fun thing about being pregnant 😂🍩🍿🧁

HayleyBean · 26/08/2022 20:36

Hey @Jaaxe I'm 24 weeks and so far I've put on 12.5lbs, but I'm the heaviest I've ever been in my life now. Just hoping it's not too much of a struggle to lose when the baby is here

Jaaxe · 26/08/2022 21:01

Thanks all, hoping I’ve done majority of the weight gain early and I’m not going to pile too much more on x

I've gained over 4 stone. Had a big baby and fluid retention, but both of those accounted for a relatively small proportion of the weight gain 😬. I've lost all of the weight and some more in about 12 months without effort and now I am lighter than I was pre pregnancy with current BMI of 18.5.

roarfeckingroarr · 26/08/2022 21:31

Baby 1: 12kg. Back in size 8 clothes within two weeks.

Baby 2: 2kg so far at 18 weeks.

I think that short of eating everything / nothing it's mostly genetic and luck

Metimeneededasap · 26/08/2022 21:35

I gained 4 stone in first pregnancy and 2 in subsequent pregnancies…on the other hand my daughter about half stone 🙄Everyone is different 💐

Yika · 26/08/2022 21:49

I gained 17 kg so somewhere between 2.5 and 3 stone. My dr did say it was too much but I was starving and definitely ate for two! Weight quickly went back to normal afterwards.

HorribleHerstory · 26/08/2022 21:53

I lost a fair amount of weight in every pregnancy except the first due to the massive stress of being pregnant. I was not well at all in mind or body.

i don’t know how much weight I lost because I’ve never weighed myself but I was visibly the skinniest I’ve ever been in all my postpartum pictures. I was also ghostly pale and clammy, covered in acne, hair like straw, in case you are in danger of thinking this is a good thing.

Don’t be like me. Gain weight and bloom.

Suzy14837 · 26/08/2022 21:55

I gained 2stone by 40 weeks - but by the time I left hospital, a stone of that had gone (baby, placenta and waters I guess). The second stone was gone after 6 months (lots of walking and breastfeeding)

MintJulia · 26/08/2022 21:55

I was 9.5 stone, 5'8" and BMI 21. I gained 2 stone and felt IMMENSE.

DS was an 8lb baby so not even very big.

I lost most of it within a few weeks, EBF.

PinkButtercups · 26/08/2022 22:01

First pregnancy I lost about a stone (singleton).

Twin pregnancy and currently 21+6 and put on a pound but since lost that pound.

It's worth adding I could definitely do with loosing the weight so luckily I haven't put on anything much yet!

JessicaPeach · 26/08/2022 23:16

I gained just over 2 stone with my singleton and 20lbs with my twins, who weighed in at 8lbs and 6lbs plus 2 placentas. I had gestational diabetes with the twins though so in reality I was losing weight that I already had to lose so it just balanced out.

Tinadecember · 27/08/2022 01:27

I've refused to weigh myself throughout my entire pregnancy, I'm currently 37+2. I was approx 10 stone prior to finding out that I was pregnant.

It was inevitable that weight gain was going to happen and I took the mindset that I should listen to my body, eat what my body is feeling, not feel under pressure to excessively exercise and remain happy mentally.

I haven't gained major weight but yes, definitely a gain there which is normal! I'll worry about getting back to pre pregnancy weight when our boy is born

georgarina · 27/08/2022 07:18

I think around 2 stone each pregnancy. I never monitored or worried about it though and lost it quickly after.

greenerfingers · 27/08/2022 16:20

Gained 3 stone first pregnancy, didn't lose it. And now have gained another stone. Absolutely rubbish EnvySad. Breastfed for two years too. And not a huge eater. Stupid blasted hormones!
