Hey,

I’ve been using progesterone pessaries since my bfp and I’m supposed to be taking them until I’m 16 weeks. I’m currently 15 weeks and having an issue getting any more! My chemist says there is a problem with the manufacturer or something..! I can’t try anywhere else as they’ve already given my part of the prescription but just can’t get hold of the last lot.

Just wondering that if I stop a week earlier than advised that this would harm my pregnancy at all? Surely the placenta has taken over now so shouldn’t be as much need for them? I’m getting slightly stressed worrying now!

thanks!x

Could you call GP to get prescription for what you need? Or call midwife to explain situation? Then you could try another pharmacy to get what you need.

The placenta starts taking over from 9 weeks and is fully functional by 12 weeks. Your placenta will be making far more progesterone than a pessary so in that respect, you will be fine.

Some women take progesterone for other reasons though such as previous problems with the cervix.

I would ask for your prescription back from that particular pharmacy and start phoning others

You've taken them for long enough, you can just stop. Most people take them until 12/13/14 weeks.

My area are having the same supply shortage, is it 400mg you are on? Because if so, they actually (at least where I am) have no problems getting the 200mg in stock. I had to go back to my GP and get my prescription adjusted to be 4x200mg per day, rather than 2x400mg.
It may be both out of stock where you are but it’s worth asking the pharmacist about their supply of 200mg!

You need to check with your dr about consequences of stopping/how to get more if needed.

Speak to the pharmacist and ask what strength they have in stock or what strengths they can order. Then go back to your GP and get a new prescription for that strength. This happens regularly with different medications so GP will happily change it.

Speak to gp, if you need to continue taking it they'll send a copy of the prescription just for the prog. And you can then take it to other pharmacies
