Hi, I have been diagnosed with GD. My baby’s tummy has been measuring very big, 98th centile so I have been having tests for GD. I had 2 GTTs. One 2 months ago another 1 month ago and passed both with normal results. However they wanted me to do the home finger prick test too because of my scan last week. I had a few high readings so have now been diagnosed with GD. I am now do confused! Did I have GD before and that is what caused the big baby ? Somehow the tests were wrong? Or did I just develop it now and the baby is big just because?! Anybody else have experience with this? I’m really going to miss cake! 😭

It’s likely you’ve had it all along. Switch to a high protein low carb diet for the last few weeks. Although if baby is measuring big they may not let you go much further a long. Hopefully they’ll give you a home kit to measure. Baby may need some monitoring in hospital to check blood sugars are ok. Speak to your midwife about harvesting some colostrum for baby.

Yeah I had a GTT at 36 weeks which I “failed” by 0.1mmol. Same in that baby had a very big abdominal measurement. If I’d had that marginally lower score I’d have been told no GD but from the finger prick tests (which at one point went up to 11 meaning I needed insulin) it was clear that I did have it had had done so for a while. It usually starts in the second half of pregnancy when insulin resistance starts to increase (it’s a hormonal issue)

Have a read of this site: GD site

anything you can do to help stabilise your sugars (and baby’s) even at this late stage will help. GD is no one’s fault. It affects people of all shapes and sizes.

But do stick to a meat, veg, cheese - low carb diet for now.

Thanks for the replies! Yes I am going to stick to a diet. I only have 2 weeks to go as I am having a c section at 39 weeks. My results for the GTT were not even close to showing GD so I don’t understand how I could have passed it twice if I had GD. My results have not been that high in the finger prick test but I’m not going to argue with the diagnosis. I am still monitoring at home. Have been normal today so far. The highest it has been is 8.6 after eating a white rice followed by a rich dessert and a sweet drink. The highest first thing in the morning was 5.8. That was after staying up late and a poor night sleep. Think I snacked on bad stuff in the evening too.

I got a late diagnosis with my second, 36 weeks I think. I passed the test at 20 weeks (ish) too! You’re nearly at the finish now- you can have a lovely big cake in a few short weeks worry free! Do the tests, follow a low carb diet and If you need the insulin take it. The morning reading are the hardest to fix. You’ll need early tests if you have another.

4.2 this morning. Ate no carbs except veggies for dinner and no dessert or snacks.

I always found waiting a bit in the morning so til about 10am to eat better and then as long as I had let’s say egg with a slice of seeded brown that was ok. I could also have apple/peanut butter mix. It’s about putting fats with your carbs to make sure your body reacts to it better.

greek yogurt - nut butter and fruit. Never fruit on its own.

small portions of whole grain with egg/meat/cheese and veg.

if you need insulin you need it but I listened to the NHS advice as as with all diabetes it’s totally wrong!! My nurse was like of course eat your weetbaix and just take insulin. I educated myself and became diet controlled and actually lost weight in pregnancy!

Merryclaire · 24/08/2022 20:40

I heard there is a really tricky insulin period, between around weeks 32-36, so it probably got picked up at that time.

I tested fine at 28 weeks but positive at 35 weeks - only borderline though. Had to be careful with diet for a couple of weeks but seems to have fixed itself now.

Still not pushing it with food, but find the readings are all fine so allow myself more carbs now and a teeny bit of sugar.

WildSecret · 29/09/2025 18:33

Hi, what was the outcome please? The exact same thing is happening to me. I have just had a late diagnoses today at 35 weeks and baby’s belly is 95 centile (it’s head and legs are 50 centile). I am feeling worried and would love to talk to someone that’s been through the same thing! Thank you so much.

Blue2020 · 29/09/2025 20:01

@WildSecret I found out at 35 weeks. For me it just involved monitoring my diet- blood sugar levels four times a day and be selective with my food. My baby was born at 39+0 by elective csection and it all went well. She’s now 5 months old.

My baby was average in terms of size. I can’t say about the size of the baby.
