Travel insurance - anyone had to claim and can recommend? (pregnancy related problems)

I've been researching the best covers...

I'm away for 1 week at 30weeks, and for maximum reassurance I want a travel insurance that will cover every eventuality as unlikely as they are to happen (hopefully!)

After several phone calls I've narrowed it down to 2 that both cover any type of premature birth before 32 weeks and the care of the mum and baby for as long as required after until safe to travel back to the UK.

Insure&Go & Aviva...

If anyone has had to make any pregnancy related claims through these and can recommend, would love to hear.

Insure & Go has a lot of detail in their T&C's, which is good, so very clear on what it does cover but also imagine there'd be a few eventualities that aren't covered as their list isn't exhaustive. They also needed 2 year medical history (conditions / illnesses you've seen a GP or consultant about etc) - hard to remember everything!

Aviva just say on the phone they cover every unforeseen complication - which sounds better, but the lack of T&C's in writing makes me nervous. Only required 1 year medical history which was easier.

Thanks in advance for any company recommendations that you've tried and sadly had to test xx

Hello - I actually had the exact same question, and came to the same conclusion had the same thoughts..! Wondering which you wound up going with? If either?

Would love to know which one you went for as I'm in the same boat at present

We wound up renewing our policy with Aviva in the end - we were emailing back and forth with them to get clarification on wording and eventually got the below reply. Having this in writing from them with reference to our policy made us feel reassured we’d be covered

below is what they told us around October 2023:

Does Aviva consider birth at any time (regardless of how pre-term) to be a 'normal childbirth without complications'?

If you unexpectedly gave birth prematurely while away this would be classed as an unforeseen event (Complication) so would be covered under the policy. Providing you have not been told you are at risk of a premature labour and choose to travel then there would be no cover.

Would an unexpected pre-term birth (e.g. at 23-26 weeks, where the baby would almost certainly require specialist care ) be considered an 'unforeseen medical emergency', or a 'complication of pregnancy'?

This would be classed as an unforeseen medical emergency so this would be covered under the policy, unless you have been told that she might go into premature labour and chose to travel anyway.

And, if so, would the pre-term new born be covered for the care it requires?

Yes the pre-born new born would be covered, providing it was an unforeseen event.

I’ve never needed insurance to cover pregnancy but i do know from bitter experience that you must tell them everything, all your existing pre-conditions, even those not related to pregnancy. You can’t hide anything as they will get your GP records if you put in a claim and they will use any excuse not to pay out.
