Consultant Review - confused

Hi,
I’ve got an initial consultant review next week and am feeling confused as to what it will entail. I also am a bit of an anxious person around hospitals anyway for fear they’ll come at me with medical procedures or needles!

Second baby and no maternal risk factors nor any for baby so far touches wood!
They decided at the 12 week scan that the new growth chart they use, shows my DS as low birth weight at 7lbs 6, despite no concerns ever arising from him during pregnancy or after birth. It’s been explained as tall people like me should have bigger babies. I was born 7lbs 4 and DM is taller than me! She went onto have my brother who was in the 8lb region.
I was briefly told that all it will be is just some extra growth scans but midwife has told me they will be unlikely to scan at this appointment so I’m confused as to what it will involve.
Anyone had anything similar and could reassure me? Thank you

Can't help on that specific point @Sunspirit but if it helps to put your mind at ease - my midwife referred me to consultant because when I had EMCS last time I was fully dilated. She said something about this now causing a short cervix. Which I googled and probably shouldn't have.

Haven't seen the consultant yet but my conclusion is referrals happen all the time for various random reasons, some presumably necessary and some not. Would try not to worry.

I had this, referred because DS was small
for gestational age and IVF pregnancy. Consultant appointment involved sitting in the waiting room for aaaaages and seeing the consultant for about 30 seconds. She filled in the forms for growth scans every 3 weeks from 28 weeks and wished me good luck.

Thank you both, I appreciate your replies.

The minute I hear consultant, I fear the worst!

How tall are you?

I'm 5ft 10 and my DH is 6ft 3. Our little boy was born 7lb 6 and no one said anything about it? 47th percentile.

He's now 98th percentile Confused

Similar situation here, I'm currently consultant led with DS1 as DD2 was 'small' she was 7lb and I'm only 5'2" but apparently women of my weight have bigger babies 😂 DD2 actually had an issue with the cord which is why she was a bit smaller but that isn't taken into consideration.
I'm 32 weeks now and have had 1 consultant appointment and a growth scan so far .. DS1 is currently tracking on the 97th centile so now they're monitoring me for him being big. It's actually hilarious. I was in with the consultant for literally 2 mins, he just said we'll keep doing the series growth scans and talk about things closer to the time. It's a bit of a waste of resource in my opinion but nice to see baby more often :) x

Cakecakecheese · 18/08/2022 08:35

My baby was in 98th centile at 20 weeks but at 32 weeks was in 34th centile so they were a bit concerned, both my partner and I are tall so baby was expected to be on the bigger side. They just kept an eye on us. In the end I was induced for non related reasons at 37+3 and he weighed 6lb6 so not huge but fine for that gestation.

So I'd say there's probably nothing to worry about but accept the extra monitoring as it won't hurt.

I had this. Im 5'8, DH is over 6'. We had a teeny tiny 5lb 12oz DD, who dropped down the growth scans my whole pregnancy.

First consultant appointment was basically a repeat of the midwife check around 16w. How are you feeling, BP check, urine check etc. Think they also tried the doppler so i could hear the heartbeat? Consultant then booked me in for extra scans at 28w, 32w (they also do 36w scan as standard in our trust). Then had another consultant appt at 34w just to check how things were going - same as above really. She was happy for me to keep seeing the midwife.

I imagine it might have been a bit different had there been other complications but the issue mostly seemed to have been growth, which they now think was related to my BP (had gestational hypertension at the very end of pregnancy). There was poor blood flow through the cord and i was prescribed asprin to try and help.

The only thing it did mean was that i wasn't able to labour in the birth centre as due to DD's size, they wanted to have continuous monitoring. I had a perfectly lovely vaginal delivery on labour ward (lots of moving around, delivered in the position I wanted to) but it wasn't the water birth i had hoped for. Something to discuss with the midwife when you get further along and see how things are progressing.

I'm consultant led currently with my first - the only reason is due to my BMI being slightly over x

WooNoodle · 18/08/2022 09:22

Yes my first consultant appointment was just like a booking in for all the other appointments and some blood tests.

Sunspirit · 18/08/2022 13:07

Thanks for all sharing your experiences, makes me feel a bit better!

I’m 5,9 and DH is 6 foot.
I’m happy with extra monitoring, just consultant made me think they’d say I’d have to be induced or sectioned etc which is my absolute worst fear.
Had a lovely birth with DS, no interventions, just couldn’t have a water birth due to meconium as he was a week over.

His weight was never a concern - he put on weight in the week after birth rather than losing it, it was only after the sonographer/midwife plotted his weight onto the growth chart for this baby that she decided it needed to be consultant. There were never any issues raised in the pregnancy either.

I suppose it makes sense to them!

At my consultant appointment they scanned to double check everything and then they knew how to carry on in terms of frequency of appointments. Think it maybe depends how long it's been since your last scan, mine was a 4 week gap so they scanned me
