Bringing toddler to fasting glucose test?

I’ve had this in my last pregnancy but I can’t really remember exactly what happens just that you drink a disgusting drink and there’s a fair amount of sitting about. Has anyone had one of these and know are they funny about you bringing a toddler to it? And can I have the bloods and drink then go off for a bit and come back or do they make you sit there?

You can't bring a toddler unless you can keep them still in the waiting room for 2 hours. You need to fast, have a blood draw, drink the orange drink (like flat strong lucozade), then wait 2 hours before another blood draw. You can't walk around much and should remain in the waiting room because exercise affects the level of glucose in your blood and may affect the result. If you think you can keep them happy for 2 hours in a hospital waiting room, and constrained to a buggy while you have your blood tests, then go for it.

Exactly as PP said, unless you can keep them still and contained the whole time, it's not practical

You are not meant to walk anywhere except to use the toilet so might be a bit challenging. Walking would lower your blood glucose levels and invalidate the test.

I did it accidentally. It wasn't a planned test but wss done then and there after my scan.

Pre-covid so everyone was a lot less neurotic about kids.

It wasn't ideal, though much of that was because I was unprepared so had no snacks/entertainment etc. (A very very lovely lady who wasn't there for hours who had a similar aged child gave me some of hers).

DD must have been about 14 months old and walking. It wasn't horrendous but if you don't absolutely have to, then don't. Take the chance for a nice 2 hour break on your own. Bring a good book.

Crikey, i am in Scotland, one baby just pre covid, one after.

It was don't eat or drink from 9pm, arrive 9am, give blood. Leave.

Never had a drink. Second was done in car park.

Thanks all, we struggle with childcare especially on the day it’s booked, maybe I can change the day if not will see if I can sort some childcare thanks makes sense about not being able to walk about x

All this talk of not walking around...
When I had mine there was nowhere to wait on the ward. You had to walk down the long corridor and go downstairs to sit in the hospital entrance or costa!

That's the HbA1c test. The drink and bloods is the GTT.

I took my toddler with me to mine. I had a phone full of downloaded toddler appropriate TV programmes for her to watch, and a ton of snacks and drinks to keep her happy. She was perfectly happy for the two hour wait. Plus I got a kiss and a hug for each ouch that was administered. ❤

@Jaaxe i brought my toddler with me, did the bloods and drank the drink, went home, and came back later at the time they told me to get the second bloods done. I had asked beforehand and they were ok with it
