Dilated 3rd ventricle on baby scan…. Should I be worried??

Hi yummy mummies ,

I wondered wether anyone could share a story or give me advice as I’m going out of my mind!
I went for my 20 week scan as normal and they told me after checking baby over that they wanted a second opinion on the baby’s HC ( head circumference) so they referred me to fetal medicine.
After attending a fetal medicine scan they then told me that the HC was measuring normal but the 3rd ventricle within baby’s head was dilated but everything else seemed ok within the baby’s brain ect. They talked about MRI scanning ect if it comes to that. I’m now 24 weeks and had another follow up scan yesterday they said the 3rd ventricle was measuring 3.2 mm which was a little over but within normal range , I was then told if it was to measure 3.5 mm it was considered abnormal! I am now just worried sick incase it gets any bigger. Has anyone else experienced dilated ventricles within baby on ultrasound scans ? I don’t know what it means and they aren’t telling me much when questioned! I just feel like I’m the only woman in the world having this news and every time we go for a scan I walk away feeling so deflated! And not knowing what to think. I just want to know my baby is ok , I feel like I’m not doing a great job of looking after her as there’s always a problem when we go for a scan.
Thanks in advance

xx

Hi @Kirsty3512, I do not know the answer but wanted to support you as i understand how that feels and how worried you are. Our fetal medicine midwife has been fantastic though and did say we can give her a call. Is it something that you feel you could do? You could call and ask for clarification as you are so anxious. It’s very hard to process the information right there and then.

or you could also try ARC charity helpline www.arc-uk.org/for-parents/ +442077137486

they help to make sense of diagnoses.

I am so sorry you are going through this this, and hope that the issue will resolve by itself very soon!

Thank you so much ☺️
I just don’t know wether I need to be worried or not if that makes any sense it’s like no one likes to give away too much information in case they are wrong. The lady that does my scans is lovely and ive asked what it means but she says I don’t need to worry about it until or if it comes to that . It’s just a scary time but knowing what to expect or if baby is ok. Then when googling it it all looks Bert scary! There’s been no actual diagnosis as of yet but I just wanted to know what to expect if it comes to that.
thank you for you’re response I hope you’re pregnancy goes well!
I will have a look into the links you sent ☺️

Hi I am currently going through the same situation and was wondering if you could provide an update please?
I’m so worried and there’s no information out there about this as far as I can see.
Hope you and baby are all okay now xx

@Kirsty3512 were in exactly the same situation now, what was the outcome for you guys? Hope all is good and now a distant memory.

Hi guys, I was in the same situation with my little one, was referred to foetal medicine at 20 weeks for a different issue but at some point along the way it came up that the ventricles in the left side of his brain were dilated, however by the time I got to my 37 week scan all the readings had gone back down to a norma level. The consultant said in most cases the levels go back down to normal by term as the baby is constantly developing xx as hard as it is, try not to worry xx
