Gestational diabetes - weakness and nausea?

I got diagnosed with gestational diabetes a week ago and although I haven’t had an appointment yet, I’ve been monitoring my glucose levels and I cut out sugar completely and unhealthy carbs. Since the last 2-3 days though, I’ve been feeling so much weakness all day long and I don’t know what to do. I’m drinking water only and I think this is why, because earlier in the pregnancy whenever I would feel weakness I would drink juice and it would be better. I really don’t know what to do now as I’ve cut out sugar. Any tips guys? I feel like crap honestly, my sugar levels are good but I’m always feeling weak and sick. Surely this isn’t good for the baby?

What exactly are you eating now, can you post your food diary for the last couple of days please.

@FatAgainItsLettuceTime i haven’t been keeping a food diary tbh yet, but it’s mostly like:

breakfast: one piece of wholemeal toast with egg or omelette, protein bar sometimes with a piece of fruit

lunch: sandwich/wrap mostly chicken one, with plenty of salad

dinner: chicken/lamb with lots of veggies and a bit of rice or bit of pasta

I feel like crap, so weak all the time! Any suggestions of drinks that aren’t water? I’ve drank flavoured water too (sugar free) and once I had Diet Coke but apart from that it’s just water.

snacks I’ve been having are apple with peanut butter, crackers with peanut butter or cheese, protein bars

You should start keeping a food diary, it's useful information for when you see the diabetes nurse and if your sugar tests start showing rising numbers you'll need to be able to track back and see what could have caused it.

I'm wondering if you've cut too much. The diet you are describing is low calorie as well as low carb, you still need all your calories.

Drinks you can have:

  • iced teas or coffees - no sugar and full fat milk
  • sparking water - flavoured is fine
  • hot teas or coffees - no sugar and full fat milk
  • sugar free squash
  • sugar free fizzy pop - limited, 1 can a day won't hurt you, if you start drinking a dozen cans then the sweeteners aren't great but everything in moderation.

If you've gone from lots of sugar/carbs to no added sugar and very low carbs you're body is going to react to that. If you're also in one of the heatwave areas then that won't be helping.

Make sure you have a drink to hand and are sipping it, saw some research that says if you just gulp down a load every couple of hours then it isn't as good as sipping small amounts regularly because it goes straight to your bladder and you dump it.

Do a TDEE calculator to give you an idea of what calorie amounts you should be eating as a pregnant woman to maintain your weight.

Log your food diary in something like MyFitnessPal to make sure you are eating enough.

Take a look here as well, very recent thread about Gd with some links and Facebook groups shared

Fasting blood glucose level 5.5 in gestational diabetes? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/4608354-fasting-blood-glucose-level-55-in-gestational-diabetes

With GD you need to be focusing your diet on good carbs, protein and fat. Dont go too drastic, especially if your test numbers are good.

@FatAgainItsLettuceTime thank you so much, that was my thread too haha because I’m so new to this so I keep asking lots of questions 😂
For the first 2 days my numbers weren’t that good but they are now thankfully. For lunch I had wholewheat roti with lamb, half a potato cutlet (grilled), chicken and spinach curry and salad and my levels were actually good an hour after lunch (6.1) even though roti/naan I wasn’t so sure about and also the potato cutlet. I hope I’m able to keep my levels managed now. Thank you so much for your help, it means a lot!

Okay I’m so dumb for asking this but is no added sugar squash the same as sugar free?

They are not the same thing no, but that doesn't mean you can't drink them it just means don't have unlimited amounts. If you look at the back of the bottle it should tell you how much sugar in the carbs section of the nutrition table.

No added sugar means that it uses the natural sugar from the fruit juice in the squash. Like how if you get a bottle or fresh squeezed orange juice it would be sweet but not have any added sugar in.
