Hair loss during pregnancy?

Constantly hearing about how pregnancy can make hair grow thicker and longer etc etc... with DS1 my hair shed SO much whilst pregnant. Currently 14 weeks with DC2 and the same thing is happening 😔 anyone else experienced the same? Any tips? I get so disheartened washing my hair and seeing so much of it come out in my hands in the shower 🥺

I was the same with all 3 of mine. Then when baby hit 12 weeks the amount that came out was frightening.

It came back after the first 2. There was a 6 yr gap between dc2 & dc3 but my hair never really recovered after dc3. Probably reduced by half.

I am currently using a gorgeous L'Occitane volume & strength shampoo. Due to medication I have been losing hair in amounts similar to when I was pregnant. This shampoo is definitely making a difference after just a week so would recommend.
Nice clean subtle herby smell as well.

It can be due to anaemia. Might want to have your bloods checked.

Me too. I’m trying not to feel upset by it, but there’s so much coming out! I’m sure with my last it wasn’t like this!

Thanks for the tip about anaemia, I have a midwife appointment this week so will mention it.

RedWingBoots · 13/08/2022 22:40

Make sure if they check you fir anemia you chase them for the result after 2 weeks. I was anaemic and it took 6 weeks for them to tell me.

Mine was terrible when I was pregnant, used to fall out in handfuls, but it soon stopped afterwards, but I did find it worrying at the time. X

Wishbub · 13/08/2022 22:47

Aha! I've been losing hair in this pregnancy (unlike the last one) and am slightly anaemic this time around. Glad I found this thread, this makes sense.

I was the same. I took these Hair Burst pills which were great

@RedWingBoots even better: ring or drop into your GP and ask them to print them off for you. I usually do this 2-3 days after bloods are taken and they’ve always had the results in by then. Means you can have a look at your levels yourself.

It was the hospital who did my blood test as I was under the care of an obstetrician.

It was a nightmare for my GP as I had blood tests at the beginning of pregnancy to check something else. The GP couldn't see the test results of any blood tests ordered by the obstetrician, but the obstetrician could see the results of tests ordered by the GP. This meant I ended up with extra tests being done and being informed of results by my GP before the obstetrician.

Thank you all so much. I had a midwiife appointment next week and so will mention it. Good shout about it being anemia. It's upsetting but reassuring that I'm not the only one!

@RedWingBoots how annoying! I’ve had a few blood tests done under consultant care at the hospital but they’ve always been shared with my GP. Seems silly for all results to not go to the same place.

RedWingBoots · 14/08/2022 19:18

@Cockerwalk they were eventually shared with my GP. My GP practice was and is very good they know that the hospital takes a long time to share info, which is why they did the tests.
