Middle back pain for months - scared

I’m 25 weeks pregnant and for the last two months have had horrible back pain across my middle - sort of the bra line area and above. It doesn’t come or go at all, it’s constant, and there seems no way of improving it - I’ve tried physio, acupuncture, swimming, yoga… the doctors won’t do anything other than tell me to take paracetamol. It makes sitting very uncomfortable. It feels like all the muscles there have tensed up.

it has sucked all the joy from my pregnancy, I’m exhausted from lack of sleep, and am so scared about it getting worse in the next three months. I’m also terrified it won’t go away when the baby’s born, and I won’t be able to look after her properly.

whenever you google pregnancy back pain, you find stuff about lower back pain and third trimester… I just feel so alone, and so sad.

Hello,

I had this in my pregnancy, I think it's posture related and, in my case, much bigger boobs than usual dragging me forward.

Try a heat pad and not sitting too long in one position, lying on your side and resting where you can.

But huge sympathies, it's a horrible pain.

Have you been to an osteopath?

Thanks so much for your reply. It makes me feel a bit better finding anyone else who had the same.

I’ve started seeing a chiro - offers a bit of relief, though then creeps back up quickly. Frustrating.

No not a chiropractor, an osteopath? Two completely different things.

Also, just to add, mine disappeared pretty much after I gave birth but came back with a massive vengeance a few months later and I'm really struggling now with back pain. What I should have done (and didn't as I have a toddler) was rest and be really careful with lifting the baby.

So do everything you can to protect your back once the baby is here. Smile

I haven’t tried that yet - will see if I can find one

I had this during my first pregnancy, unfortunately it didn't get better during pregnancy, it went away after DS was born but a couple of months later came back. I had months of deep massage treatment and stretching exercises to do and it did get better. Physio was absolutely useless. When pregnant with my DD has had regular massages which helped although it was still a tough pregnancy. Treatment straight after second pregnancy rather than waiting 6 months meant I improved much quicker. It was a McTimony (?sp) chiropractor I saw that sorted me out. I was desperate and on tramadol for the pain by the time I went to see them.

Have you done Pilates? A lot of back pain is to do with core strength or lack of it. Obviously in pregnancy there’s not a lot you can do for your tummy muscles but strengthening muscles in your glutes, back and particularly pelvic floor can help a lot with postural and back issues, and teach you what causes your pain. I’d look for a physio led Pilates class.

Thank you - yes, have found the same re physio….I’m glad yours has improved x

I’ve been doing yoga and a lot of stretching but that’s a good shout re Pilates. I think my core strength must have been totally rubbish.
