Hi,
Could baby be tall that's why they could be measuring big on growth scan? or would they not take that into account. I'm 5'1 and the father is 6'2 so I was just wondering if that could be a factor.

thanks

Don't get too het up by growth scans. They were 2.5lbs out with my daughter!

Regularsizedrudy · 13/08/2022 13:48

Don’t worry about it, they are only ever making an educated guess

I think so, we were told dd would be 11lb, she was just under 8lb so still large but not massively. She was and still is extremely long so I figure their calculations were skewed by her length.

Daisy4569 · 13/08/2022 13:53

I had an induction as he was measuring large, he was 9lb - super long and skinny 😂

Mommabear20 · 13/08/2022 14:10

My DS was measuring 'massive' for my body size, and was told I'd be induced at 39 weeks if I hadn't had him already. He was born at 39 weeks exactly (went into labour the day before my induction). He was big on their chart for my body size but he was in the 90th percentile for height but skinnier than me DD who was induced for being small! 🤷‍♀️ scans are marvellous things but not 100% reliable. Don't worry about it.

Flowerbug1994 · 13/08/2022 15:34

Not reliable at all they predicted my baby would be around 8lb 8oz at my c section at 39 weeks he came out 10lb 15oz to my extreme shock 😂😂😂 I had 3 growth scans aswell and non picked up on the size. I did have a massive tummy measurement at 20 week scan but the baby is more long than wide. He’s 10 weeks now and heading for. 6-9 month clothes.

VeryEmptyArms · 13/08/2022 18:09

This happened with my daughter! Growth scans put her on the 90th centile (8lbs 13oz at 39 weeks), and when she was born she was on the 47th centile (8lb 5oz at 41+2). But she was off the scale long! 22.5cms! Her legs were incredible 😂😂

I had a feeling from when they started talking about her being big that it was actually just her legs. Mum says I was the same when I was born. I'm 5'5 and her dad is 5'9 so you don't have to be giants to get long legged babies.

Growth scans can be pretty inaccurate in both directions.

RandomMess · 13/08/2022 18:21

I'm shorter than you and DH is taller than yours.

Our first child was 10lb 6oz she was incredibly long, especially her legs!!! She was over 6 months old before she had the length chart in the red record book 🤣

Didn't fit in newborn clothing, put her in some jogging trousers things and they only just reached below her knees.

They had no idea I was having a large baby even though I was absolutely huge Confused

Bubbles021 · 14/08/2022 08:19

I was writing posts identic to yours only 3/4 weeks ago. My little one was measuring on the 97th percentile and we were told to expect over a 9lber at birth. Her stomach was the main concern on the scans (I did get tested and diagnosed with gestational diabetes). She was born by elective section on Monday weighing 8lb 6oz and is completely in proportion! This 'humongous' tummy is so slender and in shape for her little body. We brought mostly bigger sized clothes preparing for this massive baby, but she fits perfectly into newborn (some are actually still a bit too big!) Don't stress too much about growth scans, everyone kept saying to me they're known for not being the most accurate and now I've experienced it!

Thanks to all that replied :)

They'll do measurements of head, femur and abdomen then guesstimate a size based on that (I watched them do the calculations on screen at a private scan).
They said she had a big tummy and long legs. Long legs was true but tummy was normal for her weight (9lbs 1oz).

dmask · 15/08/2022 22:48

Parents height, weight etc. as an adult has no correlation to the babies birth weight, height.

ScienceMummy15 · 15/08/2022 23:13

I was in a similar position, including the foot height difference! My first baby had a decent sized head too so I thought the same as you, long legs and big head, and was prepared for an oddly proportioned baby. She arrived at 38 weeks on the day that I was booked to be induced and although she's slightly on the longer side nothing to write home about. Oh and another case of the estimated weight being off by over a lb! She's a month now and just growing out of some of the newborn clothes.

I don't think they would take height/length into account. Did you get a print out in your folder? Mine had a scale thing for head, stomach and legs so you could see where all 3 measurements were falling. If baby is just tall then the leg measurements would be high but maybe not the other 2. Interestingly, from a genetics point of view, a small mother and a tall father would result in a long but not necessarily big baby. Hope you get some good advice about your options
