Hey guys, are protein bars allowed in gestational diabetes? If so, what are the best ones please?

According to UKGD website Nature Valley Protein bars are the best but not everyone can tolerate them. I ate them and seemed fine but I only tested my glucose level once after eating one. Kind protein bars also seemed OK.

Thank you!

Okay I’m so dumb 😂 can we not eat anything with any sugar at all in gestational diabetes? The protein bars do have some sugar, right? I’m very new to this as you can tell 😂😂

You do need to keep sugar to a minimum at least but everyone has their own tolerance levels. I cut it out completely at first but now my bloods have largely levelled out through diet control I do eat the odd thing with sugar - eg had an ice cream yesterday. But tested an hour afterwards to check it.
You won’t be able to have much though - maybe the odd biscuit or small piece of chocolate. And probably no more than once a day.

Having sugar with fat and protein lowers the spike so you can tolerate a little bit. The Nature Valley Bars have just enough fat and protein to not cause a spike for many people

So if you have sugar or other carb heavy snacks always have it with natural fat or protein. You still metabolise the sugar but slower avoiding the dangerous spike eg strawberries with cream or Greek yoghurt are better than strawberries by themselves. High fat options are better for things like Greek yoghurt - don’t buy the low fat version. Do check out the UKGD website - they have lots of info on which products are best to buy for ice cream, bread, drinks, snacks etc and lots of recipe ideas. The Facebook group is good for seeking advice too.
