I'm umming and ahhing about whether it's worth going for an early scan. My OH wonders if there's any point, can you give me your pros and cons to going for one please? 1st baby, 1st pregnancy at 39 in case this makes a difference.

I went for one at 7 weeks, I was so nervous about it being ‘real’ and just wanted confirmation. I’m so glad we did and I relaxed a little until our next scan. For me, it was worth every penny of the £55 odd quid - but it depends on your budget too!

good luck with your pregnancy!

Congratulations!

We done a lot of towing and throwing about an early scan but decided to wait until my NHS 12 week scan. Our fear was being told at 7 weeks there was a heartbeat then being told at your 12 week there wasn't. That was our reasoning behind the decision. It was an anxious and long wait but worth it.

Do what's best for you 😀

For a bit of background, I've been pregnant 3 times and each time I had a scan at 7 weeks. They look like blobs at that stage :).

Starting in reverse order, I'm 21 weeks pregnant with a boy and saw a heartbeat with him at 7 weeks.

I have an almost 2 year old dd and saw a heartbeat with her at 7 weeks.

With my first pregnancy, I saw a heartbeat at 7 weeks and then it stopped at 8+1, which I discovered as a mmc at a later scan.

At this stage, if you see a heartbeat then the odds are likely to be in your favour but it isn't a guarantee. It's worth keeping in mind that a scan at that gestation is a snapshot of that day itself and certainly doesn't tell you what the next day, week or overall health of the pregnancy will bring.

Hi op I think it's definitely worth getting a scan. I have had one each time with my pregnancies and with one pregnancy I went for my 12 week scan and the baby had stopped growing at 8 weeks 4 days but I had an early scan prior to this so had a video of the baby moving and heartbeat which meant I had at least a little memory of them. So either way I think it's worth it.

I had a scan this week at 10 weeks and got some lovely videos of baby moving.

I had IVF and had an early scan, they do this to rule out an ectopic pregnancy.
My clinic did scans at 7 and 9 weeks and I had another before my 12 week NHS scan, it was for us reassuring to see progress.
Sorry for those who have had losses, although @GreenIsle 's perspective is nice that you have a memory.

If I were lucky enough again I'd have my regular scans, we went every few weeks throughout pregnancy.

I had an 8-week scan because I'd had some brown bleeding and cramping and was scared it was all over (that's how my previous MC started). It was a huge relief to see a healthy LO, measuring well and with a good HB. I knew I wasn't out of the woods still but it did help settle the anxiety.

Thank you all.
Budget isn't an issue (thankfully)
I'm just so torn! I know there's no guarantee of anything, my mum had a MC at 16 weeks with her first.
I'm also pretty impatient so these next 5 weeks are going to really drag!!

I went for one and seen a growing sac no baby twice. So I'm now going to EPU for a internal.

I had 2 scans before my 12 week scan and found the second one much more reassuring than the first. If you can wait a few weeks I would recommend that based on my experiences.

My first scan was at 6 and a half week at an early pregnancy unit. It was reassuring to know that baby was in the right place and had a fetal pole but that was all they could tell me.

My second scan at a private clinic just before 10 weeks was much more reassuring. We could see the heart and brain and they were able to measure the heart beat.

Either way though I would definitely recommend an early scan if you can afford it. It was amazing to see how much baby changed in a few weeks.

I went for one at 8 weeks and was measuring 8w1d it definitely gave me some reassurance and eased my worries! It seems such a long wait before your 12 and 20 week NHS scans.
