What to dress a summer newborn in?

So I'm going in to have baby on 23rd August will be 37 weeks, baby is estimated on smaller side same as my previous two so looking around the 5.5- 6lb mark.

My previous two were winter babies (Jan and Feb) so I'm used to wrapping newborns up warm! Never experienced a summer newborn!

What do you dress them in? Vest and sleepsuit? Still use hats in early days while they regulate temp?

It's super warm atm and apparently long range is supposed to continue! I'm literally melting currently but don't want to overheat baby when they are here! Lol

vest with poppers is all you'll need on hot days, and even just a nappy indoors

Your baby is used to being in your body so the summer weather won't phase them when they're first born. Honestly they'll probably spend most of their time in just vests etc if the weather's this warm.
Hosp will still put a hat on immediately after delivery but it probably won't stay on long x

I used to put mine in little romper suits, so cute. I’ve got an August baby too so and remember sweltering in the heat!

A romper or just a vest, no need for two layers in the high heat. Sometimes just a nappy in doors.
Had two summer babies

Thank you! I will add some more vests to my hospital bag! It's so warm atm but I wasn't sure how 'wrapped' up a little newborn needed to be in those super early days!

I'm due about the same time and packed vests and sleepsuits for the hospital but I imagine if it's this hot he'll just be in vests/rompers within a few days once he's regulating his temp better.

I had two born in the height of summer heatwaves. For the first two weeks I either had them just in their nappy and on me (bf/sleeping etc). They really didn't like being exposed if I wasn't giving them skin to skin so I would put on a sleep suit in the coolest room in the house or I would swaddle them with large a Muslin cloths. It's really stressful but they are used to being quite warm in your belly. Also they don't have much body fat so I think that stops them feeling the heat so much. When they got. To two weeks + they start padding out a bit.

My baby was born last month when it was really hot and the hospital was boiling. Most of the time because we were doing so much skin to skin she was just in a nappy and the midwives didn't advise us to add any more layers unless we were putting her in the cot. Apparently your body is the equivalent of one layer of clothing.

Then at home no need for a vest and sleepsuit unless your house gets really cool overnight. Just a sleepsuit is what we've had baby in overnight apart from when really hot when we've had her in just a vest or just a nappy on the really really hot nights when our room was boiling. Then a lightweight blanket or sleeping bag.

Highly recommend the rompers from sainsburys that have poppers all the way down as they are very easy for multiple changes! No need to take them off over their head.

I have been using vests or rompers inside and sleep suits for evening walks if it’s cooled down or going anywhere with air con. After leaving hospital at 3 days I only used the hats outside. I am finding the 0.2 tog swaddle sleeping bags (from Love to Dream or Tommee Tippee) to be good for hot nights as you can create a swaddle effect without adding layers of fabric. They are super light like a muslin. We initially tried using a tucked in muslin as a blanket but she would always kick it off.

I had a baby during last year's June heatwave and she was a tiny one - 5lbs 12oz. I had her in babygros more than i thought because she seemed to get cold quite easily, i think especially because she was so small? And if you are in the UK, even here in the SE, the weather is due to cool a bit to low 20s the week after next so you might actually be ok.

Second pp above on the love to dream or tommee tippee swaddles. So easy and great for bedtime. If you buy a groegg thermometer, it also tells you what to put on at bedtime by temp (eg. 20c = sleepsuit, 22c = short sleeved vest, 24c = sleeveless vest etc).

You're never supposed to use hats indoors on newborns whether it's summer or winter.

tealandteal · 10/08/2022 07:49

I had my baby in June during the really hot weather. He still wore a hat in hospital but not after that. In the day he wears a romper or just a short sleeved vest. Sometimes a pair of little shorts over the vest if we are going out. At night depending on the temp he wears a vest or just a sleep suit as our room is quite cool. I have a large muslin blanket which is lovely for covering his legs.

Hats are a big no even in colder months unless you are actually going out in it. They can't regulate their temperature either way so is a huge over heating risk. Vests or rompers although it's hot this week so chances are by the end of the month it will be cold and grey, back to baby gros and cardigans.
