The Big Baby Trial and Inducing due to size

Today I was given info from my midwife about taking part in the The Big Baby Trial (Induction of labour for predicted macrosomia). Basically they induce you at 38/39 weeks.

Ive been offered this due to baby continuously measuring big on growth scans (I know they aren’t always accurate).

I’m just wondering if anyone else has been offered to take part or if anyone has any experiences of taking part or being induced early purely due to size?

I was offered induction or section due to suspected size (9 pound 13) I turned it down and ended up having an 8 pound 6 baby with just gas and air and no complications! I would weigh up and pros and cons, be very interesting to see the results of the trial!

Thank you for your response, did you go into labour naturally? Yeah I’d definitely rather not be induced if I can help it

Having been induced first time for a big baby, I vowed I would never do it again. Second time big baby, labour was an absolute breeze. This time I am refusing induction again. My body can birth babies this size, I find it all so unnecessary. I will also be interested to hear results of this trial!

I had an 'augmented' induction first time (24hrs after water breaking I was 'only' 4cm) and swore I'd never be induced again .....

However, apparently I'm currently growing a baby elephant and the thought of going overdue is killing me so I'd consider an induction, however on MY terms i.e. no drip! Or a working epidural before the drip being turned up etc

I delivered DD2 with just g&a and would really love to go unmedicated this time, but equally as much as I know 'your body won't grow a baby it can't birth' I can't cope with the though of going overdue again! Not sure I've been much help really 😂

Have a look at Dr Sara Wickham's website re. Big baby options.

Personally I have misgivings about it- if it's to reduce should dystocia then 50% happens in "big babies" (and how many of those due to restrictions in maternal movement due to interventions?)- but that means 50% happen in small and normal babies anyway....

I wasn't offered to join the trial as my third was "sga" and they wanted to induce/section at 39 weeks for the exact opposite reasons. 🙄 Turns out they were massively wrong anyway and he was a chunk at 8lb15.5 born at home at 41+6. Ironically the mw told me if I had a fourth I would trigger big baby monitoring because he wasn't small as predicted. 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

I was offered the induction but chose ELCS at 39+6 instead.
For me, it was a very positive experience.

I had no idea Big Baby was still going - I remember helping set it up! I imagine we are a couple yrs away from results now unless Covid put back recruitment 18m or so.

I’ve been induced 1.5x I like to say. First my waters had gone a few days before and I was told I’d need to be induced if she didn’t appear so I was given a nudge (7cm on my own). She was 8lb 4 at 37 weeks so thank god my waters went when they did.

Second time induced due to size and I honestly wish I’d had more confidence in my body to have the baby. I was due around Christmas and wanted her here and thought she’d be early so I was fed up and caved. Really wish I hadn’t. She was born 39+1 at 9lb 3. Induction was very painful but I don’t like gas and air or any of the pain relief options so went without.

I accepted a sweep and booked in an induction as I felt pressured into it. I was going to cancel but went into labour before I could 😂

I was asked to be a part of the Big Baby trial 2.5 years ago with my son. They continuously told me he would be a whopper of a baby and I was terrified!
In the end, I was induced for reasons relating to my blood pressure, nothing to do with size. And to my surprise, he was only 7lbs!

VeronicaFranklin · 09/08/2022 23:39

So my baby was consistently measuring big on growth scans (above 90th percentile) and they predicted her to be 10lb baby they talked about shoulder dystocia and possible induction to prevent issues. As it happens I ended up going to 39 weeks and being induced due to BP.

She was born 7lb 13 oz and on the 50th percentile.

Growth scans are notoriously inaccurate. This caused me so much worry towards the end of my pregnancy!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 09/08/2022 23:55

I was induced at 37w 5d, I had GD and DD was measuring big on the scans. She was born weighing 8lb11oz, so if I'd gone to term working on the basis of 1/2 lb a week growth she'd have been about 9lb11 or 10lb11 if I'd gone 2 weeks late.

I found induction fine, took a while to start working, had the propess pessary then waited around for 24 hrs. Then everyone was busy so finally checked at 1pm when they were able to break my waters and DD was born 5 and a half hours later, I had a bit of gas n air towards the end and while I was being stitched up as had a 2nd degree tear because she shot out very quickly.
