C section at 37 + 4, from 38

Due to baby breech, GD, low lying placenta my C section has been moved forward a couple of days.

The dr said that because of the GD baby may need a few days for her insulin to regulate itself.

also, to expect she may need help with her breathing for the first few days.

usually, stated dr they prescribe steroids to help baby breathe but is too risky to prescribe as the diabetes can get worse.

feeling excited about my girl being here but bit worried too.

has anyone else been in similar situation?

Many thanks

Hi @Briar250

Can't comment on the GD, but I had an ELCS at 37+2 for breech presentation after leaking waters from about 35 weeks and there was no suggestion of giving steroids me steroids. We had no breathing issues at all which I understand is the most likely outcome at that gestation (a few do but most do not).

I understand that the steroids for lung development are most important if the baby is going to be born earlier than 34/35 weeks and although they have been given to women having ELCS earlier than 39 weeks in the past, there's been a move away from doing that now.

Good luck OP.

Elcs at 37+4 here (not GD, but twins). No additional intervention needed for either.

Eek3under3 · 07/08/2022 17:21

I had a section at 36+6 (twins, no steroids), and one last week at 38+1 with GD (no steroids again). We were home after 5 days the first time, and the next day last week.

PS I was first on the list due to GD :)

I had ELCS at 37+4 due to GD and going in a few times with reduced movement. I went in 24hrs before section for steroids, one lot 24hrs before and second lot 12hrs before. DS was born perfectly healthy with no intervention needed and is now a happy 7 month old full of energy!

HforHavana · 07/08/2022 17:45

Just to add, after the first lot of steroids I had to stay in overnight and do my bloods every 2hrs until section. I was diet controlled and my bloods stayed fine, but they said if they went over 12 (or might of been 10), then I would need to taken to delivery suite

Passmeaplacard · 07/08/2022 17:46

I had to have my section at 37 +2 due to low lying placenta. I did have the steroids but I remember being so worried that my daughter would struggle with breathing etc being early. She came out screaming and has been absolutely fine

ELCS at 38weeks. No mention of steroids, all well with baby.
