Ward or private room

So I posted a thread about paying for scan photos and remembered another thing I found interesting so thought I'd do a new thread.

When you gave birth did you go on a ward after having baby or did you get a private room?

Only reason I ask is because I thought it was the norm to have a private room and was surprised when it isn't!

I had a private room at the hospital I gave birth in and it was my first so was none the wiser

Yep, bay of 4 and private rooms only for mums who have had severe complications, very unwell babies, etc.

I've had okay experiences both times. Last time I was only in 24 hours so it wasn't even an issue really. The first time I was in longer and I hated it but that was more being in hospital I think. No one on the ward was loud or difficult.

I’ve had two babies in two different hospitals (totally different health boards / regions).

Both times I gave birth on midwife-led units. On both occasions I went straight into a room on my own where I delivered and recovered afterwards. The first one had an en-suite, the second had a shared bathroom but there was no one else in the unit at the time. Each time I’ve only been in the one room from arriving at the hospital to going home with my baby. Lovely experience, would highly recommend to anyone who has got the option of a midwife-led unit.

Ward for my first. Quarantined in delivery suite throughout with my second as it was the beginning of covid and my three year old son had had a temperature a few says earlier.

Private room

But I paid for it both times

GorgeousGoldies · 05/08/2022 20:21

I had a private room by chance with my first - it was ok but I was completely left to it, which worked out fine.

Second, I had a private room as I’d had a PPH and was quite poorly. Again, totally left to it - not so good!

Third, on a ward of 4. One lady had the electric breast pump going all night and another was on the phone all night. Would definitely have preferred to be on my own.

Fourth, on a ward of 4 but the only one there. A little bit lonely but I was only there for a few hours.

hellosunshineagainx · 05/08/2022 20:23

I had a private room but I had been in intensive care and had already been in hospital days and was due to stay at least three more days. Not in a biased way but think it's right to be saved for people like me when possible

I gave birth last week and was on a shared recovery ward, they wouldn’t give a private room as I’d had a c section

It was hideous. Noisy snoring husbands, people on their phones, visiting siblings being all noisy, people watching tv without headphones

some places let you pay for a private room, I’d do it in a heartbeat if possible

I had a C-section and had a private room?

LittleLottle · 05/08/2022 20:24

All private rooms at my hospital too, feel very relieved about that

ClearButtons · 05/08/2022 20:25

Ward of 4 for me. It was ridiculously noisy and I got no sleep but I'm glad I had something to do (people watch) as the baby mostly slept and my partner was only allowed in 2 hours a day 🙁 I think I would have been too lonely. Having said that, I hated being in hospital full stop (5 days in total!)

Toosadtocomprehend · 05/08/2022 20:29

Our local NHS hospital has all private rooms now.
When I gave birth 20 + years ago the wards were small,no mobile phones allowed and definitely no partners overnight.
It was definitely a much better experience then than how it is now for mother’s in most hospitals!

KerryO87x · 05/08/2022 20:29

With my first I had a private room and my partner stayed for the whole duration I was in for 2.5 days and had a c section under general anaesthetic.
2nd I had another emergency section but I was awake this time and went on a ward of 6 bays mostly c section mums. I thought it would be 100 times worse that what it was but I was glad to get out after 36 hours!

MsSquiz · 05/08/2022 20:35

Both times I went onto a post natal ward with 4 bays and was only kept in for 1 night.
We couldn't pay for a private room as they were being kept for women with covid which was understandable.

Another hospital I could've chosen to given birth at only has private rooms for post natal recovery, but the hospital I chose also has the midwife led birthing unit, an excellent scbu/nicu department and the Great North Children's Hospital which meant more to me than having a private room

How come you couldn't get a private room after a section? Four sections, private room each time

2020firsttimemum · 05/08/2022 20:39

Our hospital is all private rooms with en suites too

Have to say I quite enjoyed it tbh and I'm looking forward to it for baby no2

Ward of 6 in a large London hospital following emergency c section. Utterly horrendous. Paid for a private obstetrician next time just to get in the private wing of the same hospital. £12k well spent.

Leggingslife · 05/08/2022 20:41

Ward. Was horrible. If you can, pay for a private room.

2020firsttimemum · 05/08/2022 20:41

Also I had an emergency section with my first too and still had a private room
My partner was allowed to stay the whole time too

This was also during covid. When he was in (after confirmed I was 4cm) he wasn't allowed back out but could stay until discharge

How come you couldn't get a private room after a section? Four sections, private room each time

They said there was more risk of complications so they keep all the higher risk women on one ward together to keep an eye on them

I guess it differs by trust as a friend had a section and a private room, no problem

ShirleyPhallus · 05/08/2022 20:52

hellosunshineagainx · 05/08/2022 20:24

I had a C-section and had a private room?

The rules seem to differ by trust, I’m not saying it’s the hard and fast rule for everyone

Louise0701 · 05/08/2022 20:54

I’ve had 3 c-sections and have had a private en-suite room each time. I did initially go onto the ward after the first 2 before being taken to a private room a couple of hours later but with DS2 we went straight to the room.

ImperioMarch · 05/08/2022 20:56

Norm here is for wards to have bay of 4 beds.

I was in for 5 days and even with such a small number it was hell on Earth.

It was a really hot summer and there was one fan at the window end.
I was in one of the two bays furthest from it and because the selfish folk next to me all kept their curtains closed at all times I got no breeze and next to no natural light in that time.

sunandcloudss · 05/08/2022 20:56

I was on the ward with my first and got a private room with my second. We both got more sleep and was more relaxing not having to smell everyone's egg sandwiches etc

I would highly recommend a private room xx

Tiredmum100 · 05/08/2022 21:14

I had the same bed spot, in the same room, on the same ward for both my dc, which was in a 4 bedder. With dc2 I was put in a private room which I was so pleased about, I was moved out about an hour later. I would much prefer a private room. Actually I would give birth at home if I ever had another baby, but that's not going to happen!

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 05/08/2022 21:28

I was on a ward both times.. First baby I was I hospital for 3 weeks before the birth. I was in a bay with ladies who were being induced although I myself was not. They always seemed to go into active labour in the middle of the night, and therefore I got very little undisturbed sleep! With my second baby I expected to leave 6hrs after delivery (very quick natural delivery with no pain relief or stitches) but meconium in my waters meant 24hrs of obs for baby on the noisiest, hottest ward ever. Would have killed for a private room!

easyday · 05/08/2022 21:44

I had sections and the first time was on a ward of 8.
Second time my baby had to go to NICU so was in a ward with five other women also with babies in NICU. I don't think anyone had a private room.
