October: baby due, mortgage up for renewal, cost of living rises and interest rate ridiculous

Just here to vent about my perfect storm of a 2022 really! After two and a half years TTC and with the help of a lot of doctors and investigation, I fell pregnant in January and was and still am absolutely over the moon, off my rocker happy. But my god is the universe testing me with everything else! Our mortgage comes up for renewal just as the cost of living skyrockets, and the base rate has just been increased to the highest level in 27 years, just as I take SMP. To any other mums stressing right now, please know I'm right there with you and sending you a big hug.

Most houses have increased in value and it's likely that yours has too. When looking for mortgage renewals try increasing your property value (look at what others similar on your street have sold for). You then might have a 20% 'deposit' as opposed to 15% for example and it sometimes opens up better rates. It's what our broker did for us when we renewed.

I feel ya! I'm also due October after ttc for 18 months and all this energy price increase, food and petrol increases etc are worrying me. I was hoping to take a year off but will probably stick to 9 months now or maybe less. Not sure how we would cope with me not earning anything for 3 months.

Also pregnant, baby due in September. Very lucky in that I fell pregnant quickly but yeah, starting to feel the pinch and worry about how we're going to cope 😳

Same here! Due in October, so start of maternity pay, mortgage renews in October which has gone up £250 a month, and then also our energy bill tariff renews too which will of course go up. X

Our 2 year fixed rate was due to end in October and we have just applied for new mortgage to start then through our broker - were worried about increasing rates (including base rate). I would suggest looking into this as you may be able to get a better rate now (to Start when the xurrwnr one expires). We have gone for 5 year as we prefer the certainty with all the increases...

AuraBora · 03/08/2022 21:04

Sorry that should say 'current one expires'

I'm due in October too, it's my second and we suffered years of infertility before we had our first and needed IVF. This one was a total surprise, which was amazing, only we had just bought a new house with a much bigger mortgage and I'd just started a new job with great maternity allowance but I don't qualify because I started 11 days too late.
So I will have 2 under 2, and hopefully will get maternity allowance otherwise we are screwed. Mortgage is 5 years fixed at under 1% interest so we are lucky there but the rising cost of living and specifically energy bills are really scaring the crap out of me.

Yes, I’m due October and panicking about inflation and my wages stagnating. I would love to take the full year of mat leave but not sure how we can stretch things (also not sure how we would afford childcare!)
I work in the NHS (midwife) but not sure it’s sustainable any longer, but don’t know how to look for work whilst on mat leave or what else I would do with myself! Its making me fairly anxious this pregnancy. I am lucky that I locked our energy rates in last year so we’ll be relatively buffered for a two year period.

Peasplease12 · 03/08/2022 22:24

Due at the end of September, will have a newborn at home just when my fixed term energy deal expires and the price cap goes up in October. I’d normally be going down the extra jumpers route, but don’t really think that’s an option with a baby

No help, but you’re definitely not alone

kitty1993 · 03/08/2022 23:45

Really feeling this as well. Due start of September and other half is only just starting a new job after being a student for 3 years. Our mortgage is affordable at the moment but isn't due for renewal until feb (I'm going to see if I can fix a new deal asap). Our energy bills are currently 'manageable' but that's with us having EVERYTHING turned off and being as economical as possible. I'm also the higher earner of the 2 of us and definitely can't afford to take a whole year off for mat leave. All this has been a big source of anxiety for me and I feel so angry that it's suddenly become so hard to just 'live' nowadays

Herecomestreble1 · 04/08/2022 07:57

So sorry to read this is causing so many of us stress 😞 our broker is working to fix a deal for us now, but it's still so uncertain what we might qualify for. If it helps anyone at all, heated throws use up a more manageable amount of energy and made a huge difference to us keeping costs down last winter. I'll be buying a few more this year as even just left on the sofa they do help warm the room. Sending lots of love to you all.
