Starting Cyclogest (Progesterone) at 12 weeks?

I had a MMC earlier in the year, baby died around 12/13 weeks picked up weeks later. I had my 12 week scan with a subsequent pregnancy yesterday, all fine, but my consultant has prescribed me progesterone pessaries 400mg twice a day until 16 weeks. He said it was more on a basis of making sure we’ve done everything so no regrets if I was to miscarry again. He said no need to wean off just stop at 16 weeks.

I’ve read up on it a bit since and am not sure, it seems a bit late to start and I’m worried about not weaning off? Or is it as harmless as implied?

Seems strange to me too. I was on it from 2 dpo until 26 weeks. I had no progesterone issues but had previous miscarriages so it was really just to know we’d done everything we could.

The placenta takes over progesterone production at 10-12 weeks so most people would be coming off progesterone support at 12 weeks, not going onto it unless there’s some information from a blood test or some spotting you haven’t mentioned?

I don’t think taking will cause any problems and if you’re worried about weaning you can just weaning yourself starting a few days earlier than 16 weeks.

Thank you. It was simply the first time I’d seen the consultant so he said we’ll start me straight away but yes everything I’ve read says it’s for early pregnancy and not 12+. I’ve had no bleeding or blood tests with low progesterone. I’m just wondering whether I actually do it or not or if there’s no point. I’m worried about any unnecessary treatment I don’t want to cause any issues this pregnancy if there aren’t. I’ve only had the one miscarriage so there is every chance things will be ok this time.

I believe it’s very new guidance. I had some bleeding in early pregnancy and a hospital consultant also recommended staying on until 16 weeks, but I had been on progesterone since conception as my pregnancy is IVF.

There are no risks so why wouldn't you?

That’s what I’m trying to gauge is if there’s no risks. I’m worried about it causing cramping or bleeding or anything that will irritate the cervix when everything a the moment is seemingly fine. The booklet said 1 in 100 will have that so low risk but after last time I worry.

The body produces progesterone naturally and it’s function is to support pregnancy. It’s absolutely not going to do any harm, strange timing alright, but taking it won’t do you or the baby any harm.

I recommend using them anally, much easier and far less messy.

@cyclogest
O used them from bfp to 16 weeks, but just use them back end and will stop the spotting or irritating the cervix.

I was started on them at 23 weeks with instructions to stop at 36 weeks! Do starting at 12 weeks doesn't sound late to me. I was prescribed them due to contractions+ previous preterm birth with the idea being that they'd reduce the risk of another early delivery.

Maybe it worked, maybe it was chance but anyway I'm now at 37+3 and all looks well.

It's a very safe intervention so I wouldn't worry about harmful effects.
