I'm lost with sleeping bags

I'd like to use sleeping bags from birth if I can as I have anxiety and can't be doing with blankets !
I've been looking at the Aden and anais ones as these seem to be from birth but can't find the weights for the 0-6 months. Does anyone know ?

Obviously won't know what baby weighs so want to get a couple of different sizes. Also it gets quite warm in our house so I'm paranoid about overheating. If the room temp was around 18-20 degrees would baby need a vest, long sleeve babygrow and a lightweight sleeping bag ? What temp does baby not need a vest under their babygrow ? Sorry lots of questions

sleeping bags are great but when baby is newborn you may want to try swaddling instead. It helps the baby sleep better, which is very important in the first few weeks.

Rowen32 · 31/07/2022 22:22

Definitely go with swaddling in early days, watch a video on YouTube. Part of the blanket goes under them so it's perfectly safe. To be honest, I haven't used sleeping bags yet (15 months) as so many of them have been called back for safety concerns, even the well known brands. When I discovered that I got so anxious about using them so stuck with lovely, warm, fleecy babygrows instead!

Tommee Tippee do 0-4 months which are great when they're small. The 0-6 month ones we had would have been too big when she was brand new. And we followed the guidance on the Tommee Tippee ones - so in 18-20 room she was in 2.5 tog sleeping bag and a long-sleeve bodysuit, nothing more. A year later she would have been too cold in that but it seemed to work at the time. Obviously in a lighter weight sleeping bag they'd be in more but she was an autumn baby so we just bought 2.5 tog to start.

But also agree with a PP. We found swaddles good for a while when she was tiny. Never managed to DIY but we used the velcro ones from Little Seeds. Great until about 8 weeks when she started to hate having her arms restricted

Agree newborn is better with a swaddle - it’s more secure feeling for them. They like to be cosy & feel ‘tucked up tight’! After a while maybe 6 weeks or so my baby was getting his arms out of the swaddle so that’s when we switched to a sleeping bag and it’s still working well at 6 months. It’s a bit of a faff yo get a wriggly baby into or out of a sleeping bag so when they’re tiny and you are snuggling them in bed etc a sleeping bag might be a bit restrictive.
the rule we were told be midwife is ‘baby needs one more layer than you’. I wouldn’t put three or four layers on to sleep unless it was absolutely freezing so if it’s a pay temp I think 2 and a cover/swaddle/sleeping bag is totally enough. In the summer my baby has slept usually in a vest and a sleeping bag, or even just nappy and sleeping bag. One night he had no sleeping bag as it was roasting just his blankie and a nappy. Xo

oliveroses · 31/07/2022 22:26

I used TT too and they have guidelines on what to dress the baby in depending on temperature. We used sleeping bags from birth and all fine. X

bakewellbride · 31/07/2022 22:27

I know this isn't what you wanted to hear as you said no to blankets but would you consider cellular blankets? I'm very anxious when it comes to babies and nighttime but they honestly work for me as they are covered in holes. I just tuck the baby in securely (have never swaddled, personal preference) and it's done.

dannydyerismydad · 31/07/2022 22:29

The bambino merino bags are brilliant. One size, one thickness. Initial outlay is higher, but you just need 2 to last you 18 months or so.

Daisy95 · 31/07/2022 22:32

I used Velcro swaddles to begin with as she was a tiny baby. Then used the TT 0-4 month bags which came with a temp guide of what to wear with the tog of the bag. 😊

FionnulaTheCooler · 31/07/2022 22:38

Don't buy too many until baby is here, I planned to use them with DD and she cried every time I put her in one, after a few nights I gave up and bought cellular blankets instead and she settled much better. She hated swaddling too, and sleeps like a starfish sprawled across the whole bed now, 12 years later, she's known what she wanted from day one.

RyvitaBrevis · 31/07/2022 22:41

My DC was too little for 0-6 month sleeping bags until he was 6 weeks old or more. It does depend on size. We wrapped him loosely in a large breathable muslin (Aden and Anais 'swaddle') before then, similar to how they do it in the hospital

TheFrustratedRedhead · 31/07/2022 22:41

Just a different perspective… I haven’t swaddled either baby and used sleeping bags from birth. 0-6m were almost always fine and my two were both 6lb babies so pretty small. My second baby slept on his side from birth, despite my best efforts, and managed to fully roll over at 5 weeks old which I realise is unusual but I’m so glad he wasn’t swaddled. Trust your gut, you’ll know what works for your baby! X

Arucanafeather · 31/07/2022 22:45

We used swaddle to sleep sleeping bags - safer than blankets as it’s a sleeping bag but also that meant the arms could be swandled (the legs remained looser in the sleeping bag which is better for their hips). They were great. Got ours from Jojo mama Bebe I think.

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 31/07/2022 22:46

For some reason I don't like the idea of swaddling, but I don't know why. I think it's because the baby is so restricted. But granted I never did it with my first 8 years ago so that could just be coming from no experience of it.

I have got two cellular blankets, I know baby has to be feet to the end of the crib and blanket under arms but what do I do with the rest of it ? Can I tuck it under the mattress ?

Also could anyone link me to the tommee tipee 0-4 sleeping bags I'm only getting swaddles come up

I loved sleeping bags! Let's the baby move a bit and is secure and won't fall off.
My babies were big though - too big for newborn size. I'm sure there was guidance about what the baby should wear too.
My first baby was born in a heatwave he just wore nappy and t shirt first couple weeks.

Baby was weighing 3.8lbs at 29 weeks so she's estimated to be over 9lbs atm ! So might be okay with sleeping bags anyway

They seem to be 0-3 months now - on the Tommee Tippee website, though some 0-4 months still available on Amazon (sorry, can't seem to get a URL from the Amazon app!)

SecondhandTable · 31/07/2022 22:55

With both mine I used blankets until they were about 12 weeks old or so and then switched to 0-6 month sleeping bags. My second born was pretty big and probably met the lower weight limit for them at birth or not long after but always find it more straightforward with blankets when they're tiny and can't really move, not sure why. My eldest wouldn't have been heavy enough to put in a sleeping bag for quite some time anyway as she was quite a small baby. We use/d a variety of brands for sleeping bags, mostly the Grobag brand which is now owned by TT. But have some other random ones from M&S, George at Asda, all kinds. In 18-20 I would typically recommend a long sleeve vest and 2.5 tog sleeping bag, we broadly followed the Grobag what to wear guide, which now again has changed a bit as it's ran by TT but I imagine the guidelines are the same. At the moment my 9 month old is asleep in our bedroom which was about 22 degrees when we put him to bed with the window open and in a long sleeve vest and 1 tog sleeping bag.

bakewellbride · 31/07/2022 23:05

@thunderonlyhappenswhenits I tuck the blanket firmly under the mattress at the bottom and each side. Then I make sure baby is feet to food as you said and make sure the arms aren't under the blanket. After that I tend to stare at her for a further few minutes and check she's safe as I'm crazy.

Tonight it's over 26 degrees in our room so my 4 month old is just in a short sleeved vest, nothing else on her.

bakewellbride · 31/07/2022 23:05

Foot not food!

ScienceMummy15 · 31/07/2022 23:06

George from asda says 8lb 8oz for the 0 to 6 month sized. Gro bags come with an extra popper in the arm hole in the smallest size which is reassuring when they are tiny. All the ones I've ever bought come with guidance on the tags about what to wear in different temps, you just need to remember where you keep them!

Pinktruffle · 01/08/2022 12:43

I used the Tommee Tippee ones with my son from a couple of days old (0-4 months) and will be using them with baby no.2 from birth. There is a guide with the TT ones as many people have mentioned so you know what to put them in. My TT 0-4 months have the option to turn them in to a swaddle (the arms can be sealed). I personally never did that but I'm not a big fan of swaddles. If you got one if those, you would have the option at least. My son is 20 months now and still uses sleeping bags, he loves acrobatics at night and I don't have to worry about him kicking the covers off or over his face, they are great.

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 01/08/2022 13:10

I have ordered a tommee tippee grobag 0-3 months 👍🏻 thanks everyone will see how we get on

Gone on a mad shop today and bought a few things ! 30 weeks today so felt I should start purchasing

The above graphic on layering is great, but follow your gut as well, some babies like to be warmer/cooler etc

I used the love to dream bags with my second and they were amazing, fit her lovely from birth and are a sort of cross between bags and a swaddle, I'll use them again with this baby.
I never swaddled or liked the idea of blankets, my first rolled onto her side the day she was born so they weren't really safe options for us x
