Blanket, swaddle, grow bag...

Hi all,

Our boy is due in 6 weeks time, we have a next to me crib for bedtime, struggling with what option to go with in regards to keeping him warm.

It's been a long time since I had my last baby, 12 years! Back then it was a blanket in the moses basket but I know blankets aren't advised now due to safety concerns.

What do you guys recommend or what have you personally gone with??

I've used the Love to Dream arms up bags with both of mine. They've both been very content in them!

Nothing wrong with blankets! As long as they don't come up higher than the baby's lower chest (between chest and tummy) and are firmly tucked in at each side, there shouldn't be a safety concern. All babies should be slept on their backs with their feet at the bottom of the cot or moses basket to stop them wriggling under the blankets. Cellular blankets are very breathable too.

Sleeping bags aren't advised for newborns as they are so little they could wriggle down onto the sleeping bag.

Swaddling can be used perfectly safely for young babies but you need to be careful of overheating.

Blankets are fine, it's the US that are nuts about them. Pp above gave excellent advice on the safe use of blankets.

My first was born in September a couple of years ago and we used a large muslin to swaddle him until he was big enough for a sleep sack.

I bought a sleeping bag, but even though I had quite a big baby 8pound 8 he still looked so small in a sleeping bag, i could imagine him moving underneath it. I used a thin blanket but I made sure it was really tucked in at both sides of his Moses basket/next to me and when he got bigger I think about 2/3 months I started using a sleeping bag. Now he's back to his blankets at 9 months, I think you will just know when your baby is here. I was really anxious about it x

I used blankets at first but found with the startle reflex baby was constantly kicking them off. I love the sleeping bags, my eldest used them way past 2 years and it really helped her settle. They do tend to have a minimum weight, 8lb 8oz for the George one I'm currently using. Gro bags have an extra popper in the arm holes for when they are really tiny. Some other brands too maybe. The sleeping bags tend to come with a tag advising you what to dress the baby in for different togs and different temps which I really like. Depends what the weather is like in 6 weeks, you may be able to get away with a 2.5 tog for the autumn and just add in more layers underneath as it gets colder. I didn't really think of it so much as a safety issue, I just find it more practical. With the blankets we were trying to stuff them inside our pj's while she was feeding to keep them warm for putting baby back in the cot but I just leave the sleeping bag on and it's already nice and toasty
