Once you’ve made it past 12 weeks, do vitamins matter?

If you make it past 12 weeks and everything is fine and then after that point you miscarry, could that be down to defiencies or not taking enough vitamins? Or does that have more of an effect in the initial development?

All adults should take vitamin d in the winter. But if you otherwise have a healthy balanced diet I would think it’s fine. I think miscarriage due to lack of fruit and veg is highly unlikely, but I can’t see how it would be completely ok either (I’m not a scientist by any means, but you need all your vitamins at the best of times never mind when growing a human I presume…) Perhaps it could lead to some difficulties- but I wouldn’t think an actual miscarriage.
I think taking pregnancy vitamins also helps you feel more energised, as lack of certain vitamins can cause fatigue and being pregnant is tiring anyway.

Thanks I’m concerned specifically about B12. I’m deficient but after changing doctors have struggled to get my jabs restarted. I miscarried earlier this year at 17 weeks and I’m scared it is the cause as I’m now 12 weeks pregnant again and have this awful gut feeling I’m losing this baby too. I am vegetarian so unlikely to be getting much naturally. I am folate deficient and have been taking the highest dose of folic acid since finding out I was expecting again. I guess all I can do is wait and see anyway.

I'm sorry to hear that, I would speak to your GP or midwife. Can you take B12 and get your levels checked to make sure it's going up? Are you taking an iron supplement and making sure you're getting protein in other ways if not eating meat?
I don't know that low vitamin/mineral levels can cause miscarriage but you want to be at your healthiest I'm sure :-)

Sorry to hear about your loss 💐

Having said all this… with DS1 all I managed to take were the folic acid tablets, I was so sick and nauseous and basically living off toast until I was about 13 weeks. I’m sure that’s actually very common. I told the midwife at the time I couldn’t stomach the multivitamins she said it’s not a problem, the folic acid is the only essential. So I really wouldn’t worry in the vitamin front. If you actually managed stomach all the vitamins in your first 12 weeks you’re probably well ahead of many others!
Maybe mention to your midwife about your VitB supplements if you’re concerned about that.
