Baby measuring big

Hi, just wanted to see if anyone else is/has experienced the same thing really.
I’m 23+4 weeks and went for a scan the other day where I was told the baby is measuring big - roughly about a week bigger. Has this happened to anyone else? It’s no surprise as my partner is very tall and we were both big babies. But curious as to whether it means the baby will come early/would be best to opt for c section - etc??

Thanks! Grin

Hello! My baby measured big too - she was put 5 days ahead at the 12 week scan and then at 38 weeks I had a growth scan as the fundal height was looking bigger than expected - I was offered induction or c section, but declined. They estimated she was 95th percentile but when born, she was only 59th! 8lbs 8.

She came at 42 weeks after I went into spontaneous labour. Scans are notoriously unreliable, often can be out by up to 20%. It's also not best practice to have an induction/section for a big baby alone, in the absence of other risk factors (e.g. gestational diabetes (GD)) - although hospitals often offer this to cover themselves. Have they asked to test you for GD? I have heard so so so many instances where baby was measuring big/small but came out completely normal sized.

Please try not to worry - very very unlikely that your body would grow a baby too big, if you are in good health and have no other risk factors. Recommend looking into the NICE guidance on this and also speaking to a doula, if you do feel at risk of being pressured into interventions that you don't want x

Also as you say, if baby is on the bigger side sounds like it's genetic if you were both bigger babies. It really shouldn't be a reason for birth to be more difficult. The positive birth company digital hypnobirthing course has some really good info on all this, to help you make decisions that feel right for you during labour/prior to. x

I wouldn't trust it.

Multiple scans pinned my son at 10. 5lbs+

He was 7lbs 11oz. My smallest baby!

Yes I was told this throughout my pregnancy - baby would be very big. They said baby is only just about within the 'normal range'. Then towards the end said baby had tipped over that normal range and was very big.
When she was born, she was 7lbs 10.
Hospital had predicted she would be much bigger.
Not really sure how accurate those measurements are in relation to weight.

Going against what everyone else has said here...
My first baby was measuring big throughout my pregnancy, always about a week or so ahead. During my final growth scan they said he would be about 9lb ish if I went to full term so recommended induction on my due date. He came out at over 10lb so in hindsight I'm glad I didn't wait for spontaneous labour, even though I wasn't keen on having an induction. Currently pregnant again, about 30 weeks, and I'm measuring two weeks ahead this time 🙄 So god knows how big it'll be!

You'll just have to play it by ear until closer to the time and talk through your options.

Not myself but my sister was told that her baby was measuring big, she had an induction at 39 weeks and a traumatic labour. Baby was born less than 8 pounds. Definitely too early for you to worry at 23 weeks, wait and see how things are later on

Another one for inaccurate measurements. My baby was showing to be over 10lb at 38 weeks, I was constantly getting barraged to be induced at 38 weeks (not even full term at 40!), right up until I delivered at 39+6 I had consultants and midwives on my case at how I was asking for my baby to be put in danger etc. Anyway he was born at just about 7lbs. 7.1lbs to be exact and flew out.

In both pregnancies I had growth scans for bump measuring big, DS1 was 7lb 1.5oz and DS2 9lbs so not massive. With DS2 the middle measured my bump as too big, student midwife measured it as too small and growth scan measured it as following the curve!

I was constantly told baby was big, multiple scans & tests for GD.

He was 8lb.
