CVS Testing

Has anyone been through CVS testing? I've had my blood screening results back as 1 in 85 for Downs Syndrome and 1 in 600 for Edwards? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Hiya,

We're going for that early next week. You should perhaps have the NIPT test first, as it's non-invasive and highly accurate. Unfortunately ours just came back positive after a 1 in 13 risk from initial screening, but hey-ho.

At 1 in 85, you'll probably be fine though 👍

I had a cvs in my last pregnancy and unfortunately it showed a problem that wouldn’t have come up with a NIPT. Your odds aren’t too bad though and the cvs itself was straight forward and I didn’t find it painful. Do you know why you’ve been given those odds, was it from your blood work or a high NT?

MrsMCtobe · 22/07/2022 08:57

@Hola12345 I'm sorry you are also going through this, I have mine on Tuesday. They offered the NIPT but said it won't check everything also they will only give high or low results no figures. If I opt for this and it's low they won't offer the CVS which I feel unfair

@Hopingforbetterluck I'm so sorry you had to go through that, really hope you are ok. The results were from the blood screen after my 12 week scan. They offered the NIPT but said the results will only read high or low risk no figures. Also if it comes back low they won't offer the CVS, what bothers me is it could be 1 off high risk if that makes sense

What helped me make my decision last time was the way the consultant explained it to me. The risk of there being something wrong with the baby was far higher than the risk from the cvs procedure (1/16 vs 1/100 and that 1/100 is a national average and it’s probably far less than that). I’m currently pregnant again and the odds the risk vs probability is the other way round so I’ve decided against the cvs.
I hope that helps a bit. It’s so difficult and I’m sorry you’re faced with these decisions but try to remember 1/85 is still much in your favour.

@Hopingforbetterluck Thank you so much, I've not met with the consultant yet only spoke to the midwife. I'm getting a scan first with him then hopefully we can the best decision

Back in January I got a high risk for DS at my 12 (actually 13) week scan and opted for a CVS over the NIPT. We were told the same as you re the results and we wanted a definite yes or no. Ours were 1 in 59 I think.

We went for the CVS as we were able to have it that same week, rather than have the NIPT, get a high or inconclusive result and then have to wait for an amnio which would add another couple of weeks stress onto the situation.

The test itself was fine, my H was allowed to be there with me. They scan the baby the whole time and if they're not in a good position they can't do it - as it's going into the placenta. Luckily ours was in a good position so it was able to go ahead.

The recovery time afterwards was longer than I expected - the NHS website is rather breezy about it, but I was in a fair amount of pain for 3/4 days, although that could have just been me. I had no bleeding and just some mild cramping, it was the needle wound site that hurt the most, it was hard to sit/be comfortable as I was so sore.

Our results came back all clear in about 3 working days which was great and our DD was born on 1st July.

@Wolowl Thank you so much, that's really reassuring to hear. I'm so glad all worked out for you. Congratulations on your baby girl

Yes I had it.

Similar odds to you but my son had 4.7mm nucal fold.

It was a very scary experience but the procedure itself was okay. I don't remember being in tremendous pain or anything.

My son was born healthy, he is 3.5 now.

Good luck I know it's such a rotten time x

I had a CVS done in my pregnancy as my baby was measuring small and they suspected the worst. They couldn't do the combined test due to size and position. Test came back fine and almost a year later I have a happy but still very small baby!

I found the test itsself not painful but weird. First they give an injection to numb the area. Just a sting here. Then they go in with a big needle (they jam it in fast-obviously while checking the ultrasoundto make sure they go in the right spot). This part does not hurt but for me when they inserted the needle it felt like a balloon popped. So much so that I shouted in surprise, not pain. The whole thing was over in under 10 mins. Once the anesthetic wore off, it hurt a bit but much less than they said it would (consultant said it would feel like I was kicked by a horse but for me it wasn't anywhere near as bad)

From what i read/was told the risk is veery small (same for an amniocentesis). I would never hesitate to do it.

Good luck, hope it goes well!

PS : the results also told me the sex of the baby, didn't have to wait for the later scans!

Hey, I know this thread is pretty old but I lost wanted to post somewhere. I had a successful second IVF round. My combined test showed intermediate risk for trisomy 21, my harmony which they offered was returned high risk. I’ve been invited in tomorrow for a scan, consultation and a CVS if I’m comfortable. I should also mention my 12 week scan they said the nasal bone was absent. I’m really upset and I just wanted to share this and also ask what you think of the chance the CVS returning a positive result for trisomy 21.

Missmarymack2 · 05/12/2024 20:50

@PurpleRayne89 i am so sorry this is happening to you. My last pregnancy was t21 according to nipt. I lost the pregnancy soon after the Nipt result so I am sorry I have no experience of cvs. Have you tried ringing Arc https://www.arc-uk.org ? I found them extremely helpful.
