Abnormal nuchal translucency

Hello. I had an ultrasound yesterday
(12 weeks 2 days) and they said the nuchal translucency was 3 mm which is too high so they are recommending fetal echocardiogram at 24 weeks and genetic testing for Down’s syndrome etc. I’m really worried now. Anyone else have something similar and had a normal outcome?

Did they offer you the NIPT? Or just pay for it privately to set your mind at ease...
3mm doesn't sound too high though, I thought that was in the normal range?

@Flederjo thanks for the reply! I did get my blood drawn for NIPT too. They said that will come back in 2-3 weeks. The doctor said 3 is just above normal so it has me really worried. I read some guidelines say below 3.5 is normal so I’m hoping he didn’t worry me for no good reason 😟.

Ah, they're probably being cautious, especially if all the other stuff looked ok! The waiting for the NIPT results is annoying, I've been there. Hope all turns out fine!

@Flederjo thank you!

i had a measurement of 3.6mm at my 12 week scan, I had the NIPT and it all came back fine.
im now 38 weeks pregnant and every scan since has been great, I did also have an echocardiogram to check the baby’s heart in detail at about 24 weeks and all was well.

like pp said, 3mm is still within normal range, did you get a statistic combined with your bloods? Mine was 1/26 which is why I had the NIPT.

I hope this helps :) congratulations on your pregnancy x

@BrightOrion thank you so much for the reply! That gives me more hope. They haven’t received any of my blood results yet so I don’t know any statistics. I should hear back within 2-3 weeks. I’m hoping they are just being super cautious but I’m honestly not sure it’s worth all the anxiety 🥴.

Hi, I am 19 first time mum to be my partner is 20.
we had a scare with our baby at my 12 weeks scan the hospital told us that my babies nt fluid was 7.4mm! Which was extremely high and to start looking at other options, we were both absolutely devastated. We were then referred to another hospital for further tests and a CVS test which is a needle through the belly to bring fluid from the placenta to see if anything abnormal is wrong with the baby I.e Downs, edwards & pautas syndromes. When we went there the babies fluid was actually 3.6 which is still high so we decided to wait for the results to know for sure if anything was wrong with baby, We had our results back within 3 - 4 days and baby was fine! Nothing abnormal thank god and no syndromes. We're still waiting for the second set of results to see if there's cardiac or anything minor with the baby but everything's been fine on every scan heartbeat is perfect , legs arms everything. I just want you to know there's hope and it's so common for babies to have this and then be born perfectly healthy, im currently 15 weeks pregnant today due 8th January 2023 and all I know is god is good! Attached is a scan picture of our little one. Congratulations on your pregnancy :) xxx

Thank you for a positive post. I had my scan yesterday at 13w 1d. Everything seems fine but the NT levels are measuring at 3.8mm.

I know this is an old thread. @Preciousxjoe was your baby born healthy?

freckles503 · 09/03/2024 23:24

@primrose1234 hello! Yes I delivered a normal healthy baby boy :). I know all too well the anxiety. One thing that helped me while I was waiting for further tests is that these things are measured in mm so the margin of error is high and can be the difference between normal/abnormal. So much is out of our control which is so hard. Deep breath mama! Will be thinking about you and hoping for a healthy baby❤️
