Experience of Cyclogest pessaries?

Hi everyone

Does anyone have experience of using Cyclogest pessaries? I was prescribed them by the EPU on Wednesday following spotting in a previous mmc and already bleeding (scan was fine) in this pregnancy. I am 6+2.

I started using them the day I got them as I’m desperate for this baby to stick, but they seem so messy? I feel like half the pessaries comes out in my knickers so wonder if I’m doing something wrong?

Any advice would be gratefully received! Thank you

@Cdoc
I have been using them for 16 weeks after 4 miscarriages, I put them up the back end deffo no mess, I don't know if they have made this pregnancy get to 16 weeks but it's the only thing I have done differently this time around, hope they help you.

Just4today · 16/07/2022 12:01

Loads of mine came out - but do it at night (once you're lying down) and I assume you get the good of it overnight.
good luck with your pregnancy

StaceyW87 · 16/07/2022 12:53

Insert rectally it's so much easier and no mess. I feel you get the full benefit of the progesterone that way x

Cdoc · 16/07/2022 13:12

@Babyghirl ah that’s good to know thank you, maybe I should try up the back. That’s amazing that’s the only thing you’ve done differently, I hope for me it will be the same. Hope it carries on that way for you. Did you experience any side effects to having them?

@Just4today i haven’t been doing it at night so maybe that’s where I’m going wrong too. Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy too.

@StaceyW87 thank you, another one for rectally so I think that’s what I’ll try next. Just felt like I was wasting it with it coming out in knickers!

I never inserted them rectally, I just did one last thing before bed so I was lying down the whole night, and after the morning one I lay down for 15-20 mins with a cuppa. Still needed panty liners!!

I was told that the progesterone gets absorbed quite quickly, and what comes out is the waxy carrier substance and "melted" capsule.

Pollywoddles · 16/07/2022 13:35

Another vote for rectally, I was on them up to 26 weeks. One morning, one evening and no mess.

Buttons0x · 16/07/2022 13:36

I've been on these for the last 8 weeks and they are driving me crazy 😂 take one in morning and one at night, but yes they are sooo messy but like pp's said it's the wax that it's coated in, that's what comes out. They are a bit of a nuisance but worth it, good luck with everything Xx

Babyghirl · 16/07/2022 14:24

@Cdoc
I never got any side affects other than the norm pregnancy ones, I just popped one in the morning and one at night just pushed up to my knuckle. I had a scan yesterday and your lady give me a quick 4d one did not pay for thou lol.

@Cdoc check with your doctor (or maybe it's in the leaflet in the pessaries) before using rectally. I used cyclogest and I didn't think you could use them rectally.

K2012 · 16/07/2022 15:23

I was on cyclogest till week 12 and used them rectally. Make sure you lie down at least 10-15 minutes after you’ve inserted them.

I had some side effects with cyclogest: bloating, used to go toilet 2-5 times a day and stool was sometimes dry (sorry tmi) and there was a lot of stool I even lost 2 kg because I went toilet so much lol

Tulip1112 · 16/07/2022 16:14

@cdoc I'm another cyclogest up the bummer 😂!! Just finished my 11 week course last week- my experience sounds a little like yours. I found I was cramping and having a sore cervix with vagina insertion plus I couldn't cope with the anxiety of it leaking out and me running to check I was wasn't bleeding. I did find them tough going, I won't lie to you, they made me sore and nauseous among other things (although I do know that could have been baby!) but I kept at it as it was something new to try in my 3rd pregnancy, after 2 losses. I'm 18 weeks today and all my scans etc have been bag on dates so far 🥰 wishing you the very best of luck and sending hugs x x

K2012 · 16/07/2022 16:24

Btw forgot to add that I started having spotting (dark brown) at week 8 and lasted till week 16. I thought I had miscarried and had 2-3 scans in that period but baby was fine and I’m currently holding him in my arms ❤️ Consultant said it’s a common side effect of cyclogest to have spotting but it doesn’t say that in the leaflet under side effects.

Hi any moms our there who can answer my querys about Cyclogest progesterone pessaries or have been in the same situation? Previously i had 3 recurrent miscarriages, then i was referred to the miscarriage clinic In hospital, now what a coincidence a few days before my appointment with the consultant i had a positive pregnancy test, i attended my miscarriage clinic appointment but as i was already pregnant about over 5 weeks i DID NOT have any blood tests or anything to check if my progesterone levels were low. However the doctor recommended low dose aspirin daily and Cyclogest progesterone vaginal pessaries, 2 times 400mg daily upto 15 weeks then on week 16 gestation 400mg every other day which i took up to week 36/37 ( in my report he wrote at week 16 use one every other day, now to be honest a few days ago i came across the report and it sounded like after week 16 i should have stopped the pessaries😬) I’ve read around about 16 weeks of pregnancy the placenta takes over and produces high amounts of progesterone. And also a lot of mums here have mentioned they stopped Cyclogest around about 16 weeks. But i continued with one 400mg every other day up to 36/37 weeks. NOW MY CONCERN OR QUERY IS AS I DID NOT HAVE A BLOOD TEST TAKEN TO CONFIRM DEFINITE LOW LEVELS OF PROGESTERONE, could i have caused any serious long term health issues such as breast, ovarian or endometrial cancer risk by loading my body with high doses of maybe unneeded progesterone??
i stopped in mid feb 2018.
I would love to hear from POLLYWODDLES whose post i read here from last may also anyone else who can offer any advice.

Pollywoddles · 24/04/2023 08:07

@Mommy786 Stop worrying, I didn’t have any issue with Progesterone but after recurrent miscarriage I was put on it. My consultant left me on it because in his opinion its purpose is literally to support gestation, there are no risks to taking it.

Melusina123 · 24/04/2023 12:10

I was on Cyclogest 6-16 weeks. Not my favourite experience! I always did them vaginally because the study that found a benefit for women with history of miscarriage+ bleeding they were done vaginally and I wanted to track as close to the study protocol as possible.

I just did it directly before bed in the evening, and tried to lie down for 20mins or so after the one on the morning. Sometimes quite a bit of it came out (if eg I then went for a walk or to the loo), but as others have said that's the wax; as long as it came out fairly melted I assumed the progesterone had been absorbed. I think there was one day where it came out still pretty solid about 10 mins after I put it in when I went to the loo so I decided to put another one in.

It's not the funnest part, and I have no idea if it actually helped, but it did help me feel like I was doing something.

Hi i know this post is old. Just wondering about cyclogest I’m on 400mg 3 times a day rectal as it really irritates front. I’m 8 weeks and have has on and off spotting but some has been fresh blood scan looks okay and cervix closed. Did progesterone cause spotting even though used rectal??
