Reassurance

Hi all! So I’m just looking for some reassurance or advice if someone has been in a similar situation. I’m currently 10+4 and yesterday I started getting a stinging feeling when I pee. I’m prone to water infections so figured I’d see how it was today then call someone. Today it doesn’t hurt at all and I’m peeing mostly fine but I started getting sharp pains in my uterus on both sides so called the midwife, she referred me to the doctors to check for urine infection and they told me to come today. I went and was told I have a slight water infection but not full blown. She has prescribed me antibiotics but she said just for extra reassurance she wants me to call tomorrow and book an early scan. She is 90% sure it’s just a water infection but wants to be safe. I am thrilled I’ll be seeing my baby earlier but obviously I’m terrified something is wrong. The pain has gone now and when it comes back each time it goes when I pee. I don’t know how to feel but I’m stressed that something has happened. Will the scan be a vaginal one or ultrasound?

A vaginal scan is also ultrasound. Whether they do it vaginally or abdominally will depends on the sonographer and on the quality of images they get.

To be honest in the early stages a vaginal one generally gives better images since the fetus is still so low down and close to the cervix. I only had vaginal scans at 8 weeks and 11 weeks, and for the 12 week scan a combination depending on what the doctor wanted to see.

I found the abdominal scans more uncomfortable since they often had to push/press down really hard!

Thank you!! I was aware that it was also an ultrasound but was just unsure about which one is more likely at my stage of pregnancy. I don’t really mind which as long as my baby is okay, I’m just hoping that I won’t have to wait too long for an appointment.

I work in obstetric ultrasound. Have you spoken to your local EPAU?

It does sound like a water infection but good to get a scan just incase. At 10 + weeks, usually we would be able to see abdominally but this does depend on several factors. Sometimes due to the position of your womb, overlying bowel gas, body habitus etc it's better to have a transvaginal scan. It just gets much closer to the pregnancy and ovaries than abdominally. If you go with a really full bladder though you may just be able to have trans abdominal. Hope everything goes well for you and you're feeling better soon!

Thank you for your message! I have to call EPAU tomorrow to see if they will see me for an early scan. I’m hoping they will see me at the weekend but not sure if that’s too short notice. Thank you for your advise! It’s really helpful!
