hello and welcome
In the part of North London where I had my two boys, gender scans where not available on the NHS. They had found that certain ethnic groups didn't return for further antenatal appointments if it was found to be a girl

DillyDally · 25/11/2004 12:49

Hello
I was told it was a girl and it was!
Apparently if they say girl it is less likely to be accurate than if they say you are having a boy
but fingers crossed

coppertop · 25/11/2004 13:06

With ds1 I was told that he would be a boy - and obviously they were right. We then moved and down here they have a policy of not telling you (for similar reasons to the one Suzy mentioned). There have also been cases of people trying to sue because they'd been told they were expecting a boy/girl and had bought everything in blue/pink, only to find out that the prediction was wrong. You have to sign a notice stating that you will be told to leave the scan-room if you ask about gender.

fufmum · 25/11/2004 13:11

Yup i live in London and my hospital refused to tell me too so i payed to have a privae home scan. It wasn't as much as you would think and as i got to watch my DS for nearly an hour on screen, was given 10 pics to keep and a 40 min video of the scan, which i will forever treasure i can honestly say it was worth every penny!

DillyDally · 25/11/2004 13:36

I must add I got mine on the NHS but had an aussie temp doing the scan so perhaps he didnt know the rules.

Tinker · 25/11/2004 13:39

At what stage can they tell, how many weeks?

beansmum · 25/11/2004 13:40

think it's more accurate if they tell you it's a boy than if they say it's a girl. If they say it's a girl its because they can't see a penis but it mught just be out of sight!

amynnixmum · 25/11/2004 13:45

My friend had to pay £100 for a private one because they do not tell you in dorset. The trust say its because of certain culures' gender bias and also the threat of litigation. However, my sister lives near slough - very multicultural -and the hospital there was quite happy to tell her. Both scans were accurate - my friend had a boy and my sis a girl.

Pidge · 25/11/2004 13:49

Tinker - I have known people find out at the 12 week scan, but most people don't get to know until the 20 week scan. I had an additional scan at about 15 weeks, and I think they would have told me then if I'd wanted to know.

The rules vary from hospital to hospital - so sometimes you can find out on the NHS, sometimes you'd need to pay for a private scan.

if you say yes, they can reposition the scan thingy to get a closer look between the legs i think..it doesnt mean they already know

I live in a multicultural area and was convinced I wouldn't be told, but at 20 weeks was asked if I wanted to know - said yes, told it was a boy and was even given a scan of his 'bits' to prove it!!
Apparently, if they say it's a boy they are generally right (ie definate willy), girls, willy may be hidden....IYSWIM

DillyDally · 25/11/2004 14:04

I think it must be pot luck as to the person doing the scan and I was just lucky my NHS man didnt mind me asking.

bonniej · 25/11/2004 14:32

I asked at my 20 week scan. I was told it was a girl and it was. The lady doing the scan said as far as she could tell it was a girl, 'if it's a boy, he's got the smallest willy I've ever seen' were her exact words! I was hoping it wasn't a boy after that, poor thing would have a complex before he was even born

Twiglett · 25/11/2004 14:36

found out with both of my pregnancies at 20 weeks and they were both correct .. boy first then girl

bonym · 25/11/2004 14:39

We asked at 19 week scan and were told that she was pretty certain it was a girl - she looked specifically after checking everything else. We know it's not 100% guaranteed but we did time conception to maximise the chances of a girl, so fingers crossed. Don't really care if it does turn out to be a boy but he'll look a bit daft in the 2 gorgeous little dresses that I couldn't resist buying the other day!

smellymelly · 25/11/2004 14:39

Found out correctly with both ds (at 22 weeks)and dd (at 16 weeks).

Lockets - with this pregnancy I'm expecting twins, and we saw the 'boy' at 12 weeks, so it is possible. Girl was guessed at 15 weeks, and confirmed at 20 weeks. We have had scans every 4 weeks, and have made them check every time!

aloha · 25/11/2004 14:41

I had my scan at 12 weeks and wasn't allowed to know - not because of possible terminations for gender or anything, but just because it is more likely to be inaccurate at that stage (it was a new policy - with ds I was told very clearly that he was a boy at 12 weeks - we were even shown his willy on screen!) . At the 20 week scan at Kings this time round, no less than three people all said my baby was a girl, including the professor of prenatal scanning! Very pleased to find out both times.

pollyanna · 25/11/2004 14:48

my hospital will tell you at the 20 week scan. It was accurate for my first (a boy) and I have been told I am having a girl this time (don't know yet if this is accurate though!). I know UCH has a policy of not telling though. Depends on the hospital I think. Whereabouts are you mrswoman?

Tinker · 25/11/2004 15:29

Is it the willy or the balls you can see? Sorry to be graphic but at my nucal scan, there was a between the legs shot and I though "uh oh, think I know what it is". Sonographer pulled back then so it's a from a distance. Have tried to freeze frame the video even though I'm not sure I want to know really. So, not sure but...

Blackduck · 25/11/2004 15:56

In the case of ds he was very obliging - so both!

mrswoman · 25/11/2004 16:03

im from Newcastle-upon-tyne but i had my all my scans in the other side of the water in sunderland with the first 2 babys they wouldnt say what you were expecting and as im expecting my 3rd they only just started to doing it when i saw my scan i saw 2 white lines (as she showeed me her bits) and when my friend got hers done you could see his bits including the 2 balls and a line but for anyone who fancys a look i have found a website that shows gender scans and "their bits"
pregnancy.about.com/cs/ultrasounds/l/blultragender.htm
