Really bad stitch whilst walking - should I be worried or am I just overdoing it?

I am 26 weeks and I am naturally a fast walker - I walk fast everywhere !

Yesterday I started off at usual pace and half way to my car got a really bad stitch and had to really slow down so that I was almost hobbling.

Could i have harmed baby? or is it just my body telling me to slow down?

It nearly happened again this morning walking from my car to work.

I sit down all day for my job so maybe I just need to start slowing down and leave work 10 minutes earlier to go and pick my boy up from school so that i am not rushing.

I had this in my first pregnancy and was really worried, but MW said it was just my body telling me to slow down. I had been over doing it that day. Like you I always walk fast and found it very frustrating to not be able to do everything at my usual pace!

I'm glad I'm not the only one! it seems harder to slow down second time when you have another one to run around after!

I belt along everywhere I go too! A bit wierd actually as I am a bit naturally lazy, like my dad, but can't stand ambling if I am going somewhere.

I walked to work and back 2 miles, uphill, thru both my pregs. Many a time I had to ring them and say 'I am about 2 or 3 mins away, but I AM going to be late. I have to sit down and rest!'

I would get the most horrendous stitch down the right side of my bump, felt like my belly had split!

MW told me I was going too fast too!

i have been getting these, and i didnt even check with midwife but if i dont walk fast when dd is in buggy i wouldnt get anywhere as i walk very slowly when she is walking.

Yes I also get it and MW said it is nothing to worry about and it is really common. It is a scary sore feeling though!

I've been getting this if I walk much, even if it's not fast. I'm 26 weeks too. I think the muscles are just doing a lot extra so doesn't take much to give you a stitch. really hurts though, know what you mean about feeling like your belly's split! Also with me it seems to coincide/provoke a braxton hicks briefly as well, which I take to be a sign I need to stop and sit for a bit.

NoMoreHighHeels · 17/01/2008 13:12

Add me to the list as well for getting a stitch! I'm 29 weeks and been getting them on and off for a month or so. It seems to be a common problem with your muscles expanding with baby so although it's uncomfortable and you hobble along at a snails pace feeling ridiculous, baby isn't being harmed.

Really enjoy my walking too, can't wait to get back to my fast pace and a 4-mile a day walk with my pushchair doing the school run!

lucysnowe · 17/01/2008 13:39

Yes I get them too - once in the middle of a long walk with DH in the middle of the countryside with no where to sit down! Slowing down really made a difference though.

I got this for first time yesterday and it got worse and worse all night, today i can't stand it. Went to midwife before and she said it stretching. I'm 24 weeks nearly and it was quite a shock. She said it's as the baby moves up and the rib cage opens out.

I am 38w+4 and find if I walk fast, first thing in the morning to take my son to school, I get a stitch, but later in the day or when I walk to pick him up I don't get it at all and sometimes I am walking faster at that time.
With me, I need time for my muscles to stretch and warm up a bit before rushing around!

I am also 26weeks, and I get this all the time, espcially down the left hand side. If I get up of a chair to fast I can get it to.

Its nothing to worry about.

deaconblue · 17/01/2008 19:31

oh I get it too, am 23 weeks. I was pushing ds in pram in the rain today and had such a stitch all along the bottom of my bump. Just walk a bit slower and you'll find it goes. By the time I was 30ish weeks with ds I couldn't walk in any way other than slowly!
