How early did you all start purchasing baby items? I can't stop looking online 😍😍

The temptation is real 🤭

The answer is 'whenever you like', however whilst the vast majority of babies are born healthy and at term (or very nearly) there are still a lot of reasons why, sadly, some aren't.

Really, I wouldn't advise buying anything until after 12 weeks. People call this the 'safe point' but honestly, there's no such thing. There is no point in pregnancy where things suddenly become 'safe'. After 12 weeks a pregnancy is LESS LIKELY to end in miscarriage (I lost twins at 19 weeks and its possible to lose babies much later than this also) but as many people can attest, sadly it's not always the case.

If you want to start buying baby stuff, I'd recommend getting one or two very small, inexpensive things to begin with, like socks or bibs. They can give you something tangible to look at and hold and may help offer you hope for the future. I really wouldn't be thinking of buying anything bigger or more expensive until much later on.

By all means browse for baby things you like! There's absolutely no harm in window shopping and it can help you build an inventory of things you'd like to look at or buy later on in pregnancy. Babies seem to need a lot of stuff these days so doing research on products which would work best for you early on is never a bad thing.

Nobody should be telling you what to buy or when to buy it. Pregnancy is hugely exciting and I understand the urge to crack on and start preparing but there are other ways you can prepare without having a house full of stuff. You can start putting money aside for things you want to buy later on, for example. You could also make a scrap-book type thing of products and ideas which interest you.

When you get past ABOUT 20 ish weeks, you could start looking at things which might need to be pre-ordered, such as a pram if you're hoping to buy a new one.

Lastly, focus on your pregnancy rather than immediately buying physical stuff and ENJOY IT!

Best of luck.

@allthingssparkly
You have 2 kids, right?

Surely you still have some stuff from them?

allthingssparkly · 10/07/2022 07:48

Thank you @Squiff70 😊 it's been so long ago now since I as pregnant with my two boys, so I just can't contain my excitement this time round even though it's still SO early!

Bahhhhh, hit post again, darned fingers!
Wanted to add, assuming the other 2 are still small!!!!

allthingssparkly · 10/07/2022 07:50

No I dont @Regenbogen22 my children are 9 and 8 and once my 2nd child had grown out of everything it was all donated to friends and charities. I wouldn't have had anywhere to store!

I know that feeling, barely have any room to store the current stuff! 😫

Regenbogen22 · 10/07/2022 08:17

Ahhhh, somehow from your other posts I assumed your other children were still little 😅

Ah well, you can have fun buying over again!

I had a big gap between 1 and 2 so had to start again with all stuff as well :)

My advice would be to make a spreadsheet/paper list/pinterest board(s) plus savings pot - it helped scratch the itch for me while delaying the actual spending of any money!

I decided to research the bigger/more expensive purchases like pram, so that I could be 100% sure I was getting what I wanted, early on. I made a shortlist of a couple of expensive models that I'd only get if I found second hand, a couple of medium models that I'd look for sales and discounts, and a cheaper model that did everything I wanted that I'd buy as a last ditch option if everything else fell through. This worked pretty well and I started looking out for sales/second hand from about 13 weeks. I ended up with one of the expensive models (€6-800 new) for €150, and it's done really well.

For other stuff I made a list and ordered it by importance (essential/helpful/nice to have/unnecessary) and urgency (do I need it straight away or can it wait) and again kept an eye out on sales and second hand offers. I also did a similar thing of identifying an "if we win the lottery" version and a "cheapest I'd be happy with" version. Because of the age gap, people were also thrilled for us as they were mostly out of the baby stage and wanted to give us all their hand me downs! Especially people whose eldest child was DS1's age and had one or two younger ones but were done. So we actually ended up with a lot of stuff and it was useful that I'd delayed buying things so we didn't end up with loads of duplicates.
