Travelling whilst pregnant - looking for help

I wonder if anyone can help. Recently, interrail celebrated it's 50th Birthday and there was 50% off all tickets. Despite being about to start IVF, having only been given a 10% chance of success by the consultant, we booked our passes thinking it would give us something to look forward to. Original plan was that we'd go next April/May.

Fast forward and I'm now 11 weeks pregnant and trying to figure out what to do. Tickets are only valid for a year and as they tickets were bought through a deal, we can't get a refund so our options are as follows:

  1. Go in October - I'll be about 6 1/2 months pregnant and I just have no idea about traveling at this stage of pregnancy - not just Dr's advice but also how much energy for strolling around cities I'll have.

  2. They've offered us an extension which would mean perhaps going the following year with a 15 month old baby. This sounds terrifying to me as a first time mum but maybe other brave mums can comment!

If we could go earlier, we would but unfortunately, I cannot take time off during September.

Any thoughts or opinions would be much appreciated.

Hi, I'm currently 27 weeks pregnant and we just got back from holiday in Mauritius. Completely different kind of trip but I have to say even though we did virtually nothing but chill, I am knackered 😂 the travelling has been a lot the past couple of days (24 hours total including transfers, flights, trains, waiting). However, in terms of actual medical advice, as long as there are no complications with your pregnancy you should be fine to go!

I also went to Copenhagen at the start of last month and the constant walking etc did exhaust me. I suppose if you plan your trip well you wouldn't feel it as much, we were nonstop!

To put in perspective, I aren't unfit. Pre-pregnancy I was running half marathons in 1:45 but I've defo lost that and put on a little weight in the process 😂

I went away and did lots of hikes when I was 3 months pregnant, had another way trip at 5 months pregnant and my son is now 3 months and we have a holiday booked for this summer. There's nothing to be afraid of as long as you don't go to a risky place and if you are informed about all the food and activities. I'd advise to have a holiday before the baby's born, it'll be fun and all your breaks will revolve around the baby later. If you choose to use it later, I'd say use it when the baby is 3-9months. It's mine and DP first child but a few of our friends have kids and they say the best time to have a holiday with a child is before they can walk lol.

I say go on the train, but not too long a journey as it starts to get uncomfortable. I went to Majorca as ~26 weeks pregnant and to Ireland and back at 30/31 weeks. The travelling part is tiring and sitting for extended periods isn't the most comfortable, but I was still hiking at 26 weeks pregnant, only stopped last few weeks (and I've had covid)

I went travelling by train at 5 months pregnant. It was absolutely fine. My energy levels were back to normal once I'd got through the first trimester so no problems waking around cities and sightseeing. I'd definitely go for this option over your second choice.

I've always done a lot of travelling, both before and after having DD. When she was 18 months old we travelled through Croatia and Bosnia. But, we did this trip by car! There's no way I would have contemplated doing it by train with a toddler (and I had a reasonably well behaved one), sorry! Definitely go before baby is born and enjoy your last travelling trip just you and your husband!

I went by train round Japan at 6 months - it was brilliant.

I’d rather go when pregnant than with a 15 month old; I’d actually say if you’re thinking of going with your baby go when they’re more like 6 months and once they’re mobile things like that become harder and 15 month old would not be great on inter rail
