12 weeks pregnant, SPD has kicked in and I can't walk ARRRGGH

I got SPD last time at 14 weeks - got crutches, then a wheelchair, got some treatment from a specialist osteopath and got better-ish and was staggering from 34 weeks.

This time, today, bang on 12 weeks, I find a have massive pain in my hips and bum, a grinding pelvis and am unable to walk beyond about lunchtime. Had to lie in the bath for two hours today just to get through the afternoon.

DD is only one and doesn't understand why mummy is so sore and upset. DH is worried because how can I look after her when he's at work. Oh and to top it all off, we are supposed to be going on holiday - by ferry - and there is no way I can climb stairs.

ARRRRRGGH. Worst of all, been to see the osteopath and he did the same thing and it didn't help one iota. Plus he annoyed me by calling me a lentil weaver for still bfing DD!

So it's off to the hospital physio to pick up more crutches and a temp. disabled pass for my car - hey, at least I can park in the mum and baby OR the disabled spots with impunity though

hugs it is not nice is it.

For what its worth I became a patient sitting in one place mummy for ds1 while pregnant with second one. We were very close and I got him to climb up onto my knee to be with me.

Have you and dh had some thoughts about how to make your household spd friendly?

bodiddly · 16/01/2008 20:57

horrible ... I had this last time I was pregnant though not as early on in my pregnancy ... it is miserable. I am sure I saw something on a thread earlier about someone who went to a cranial osteopath that cured theirs ... it might be worth a try!

whomovedmychocolate · 16/01/2008 20:57

Thanks for replying.

It's a fifteenth century thatched house - there is no making it chair friendly. We found that last time! Every room is on a different level with low ceilings so you have to duck constantly! I may have to move in next door (we have a guest flat in the building next door which is just about chair friendly) but which has no real cooking facilities.

Bodiddly - well the cranial osteopath cured mine - for a while, last time. But this time, it made it worse. I'm going to give it another go because I have 28 weeks to go still!

The problem is because it gets earlier each time by the time I know there's a problem, it's a serious problem. If I had any more babies after this one it'd probably be pelvic pain and not a test that let me know I was expecting

Big hug

I was a fellow sufferer. Spent a lot of time sitting and crying with ds1, and a lot of time wondering if I would ever be right again with ds2.

I now have the most wonderful boys in the whole wide world and it was sooooo worth it.

Take things an hour at a time, dont think how long you've got to go

whomovedmychocolate · 16/01/2008 21:11

Thanks bubblejumping. It's just knowing I can only do half an hour of stuff a day - it's like having a newborn again.

DD has only just learned to walk (thank goodness she did) and so wants to be picked up a lot and I end up having to sit on my birth ball so I can pick her up with only my arm muscles.

Argh, I really sympathise. I was on crutches with SPD, and then eventually couldn't stand at all - it was awful, and mine only started at about 34 weeks-ish. You poor thing. Nothing worked for me - massage, physio, osteopath, chiropractor, support belt etc. I think you and your DH need to sit down and have a proper chat about how you are going to get some extra support during this pregnancy.

sweetkitty · 16/01/2008 21:15

I was going to start a thread about it today, I'm 15 weeks and it's started again I suppose I'm lucky in that I could manage without crutches just but the being in constant pain whilst moving is bad enough.

Last time DD1 was between 1 and 1 1/2 when it was at it's worst so a baby still, she spent a lot of time snuggled up with me on the sofa reading or watching cbeebies, am worried this time as I will have 2 yo DD2 who is not the reading or watching TV type.

Does cranial osteopathy really help? I've never heard of it for SPD before. All I got last time was a support belt and some exercises to do.

whomovedmychocolate · 16/01/2008 21:20

TBH sweetkitty, I'm deeply skeptical about osteopathy, there is a guy in my local town who offers a treatment he devised who is studying SPD and he's found some good results. In my first pregnancy it really helped but I am just a tad cynical because SPD can be cyclical anyway, some people find it comes just at the end, some continuous, some intermittent.

We don't have a TV either, so that's not a go-er. Though DD does read vociferously so we can spend two hours a day going through her books.

DD is having quite a lot of fun rolling my birth ball from one end of the living room to the other, for hours every day at the minute.

I did get some good tips though from the physio and one of the ones I didn't know is that any form of pushing exercise (trolleys, vacuum cleaners etc.) is the worst thing you can do - bar the splits, that's pretty daft! - and should be avoided at all costs. Also to ditch your heavy handback and get a small backpack (I get DD to carry my bag these days - I'm like the queen ).

just wanted to send hugs, I had this from 12 week and spent months on crutches and on bad days in my wheelchair. My dd1 is older so a little better, but still wante dme to play with her and couldnt understand why i couldnt bath her
DD2 is now 4 months and im still suffering

Hope your ok and they are worth it

sweetkitty · 16/01/2008 22:17

WMMC - ah the birthing ball have to get mine out the loft, it is so hard though isn't it when you have a LO wanting picked up for a cuddle. I'm trying to pick up DD2 as little as possible now getting her a bit more indepedent. But I will still have to do things like lifting them in and out of car seats, pushing a pram etc. At least this time hopefully it will be the Summer months and they can run about mad in the garden for hours.

kerala · 16/01/2008 22:20

ow ow ow it really hurts you do have my sympathy. And that seems very early to get it I wonder if it comes on earlier in a second pregnancy? Was on crutches from 30 weeks so have some idea of what you are going through. Perhaps it will ease off though, some have found it comes and goes?

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 16/01/2008 22:26

whomovedmychocolate, I had SPD with my last pregnancy and found it only went after I stopped breast-feeding (3 months post-birth).

That makes me wonder whether the SPD may be worse while you are both pregnant and breast-feeding?

whomovedmychocolate · 17/01/2008 08:35

Apparently it comes earlier each pregnancy kerala

Cocodebear - well I wasn't breastfeeding first time round and it was just as bad - I don't see how relaxin can be affected by prolactin levels TBH.

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 17/01/2008 11:59

Mine has started at 15, 15 and 12 weeks so a bit earlier this time.

I am very lucky the minute the baby is out it goes, breastfeeding didn't matter.

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 17/01/2008 13:42

Maybe it was coincidence, and it just took that long for my hormonal levels to go back to normal.

I had no SPD with my first pregnancy, but a ventouse delivery, and I always wonder if that aggravated things. Second time round it came on at 18 weeks, so I'm dreading trying for no 3, with two under-4s to look after!

Best of luck, whomovedmychocolate. I will be thinking of you. Are there friends or family around who could help out with child care so you can rest?

Sorry about your holiday. Presumably ferries have to have disabled access? At least you do have the perfect excuse now to lie in the sun while your DH runs about after the LO.
