How accurate are baby measurements when pregnant?

I'm 38+3.
I'm due to have a c section next week.
Baby has always measured bigger but just within normal range.
They've done another scan today and have said she's on the 99th percentile (8lbs 4). Therefore tipped slightly over the 'normal' range.

I'm wondering how accurate the measurements actually are as I've heard different stories from people who have said their baby was a completely different weight to what was predicted from scan measurements etc.

They're saying they feel it's safe to wait until the c section date next week as I will be a few days over 39 weeks by then, and they prefer to wait until after 39 weeks so their lungs are fully developed.

I had growth scans for all 3 of mine and they were all spot on

SharpLily · 05/07/2022 17:14

In my experience, not very. Neither of my children were anywhere near what doctors predicted.

MiracleBaby2022 · 05/07/2022 17:15

Mine was spot on

Isittimef0rbedyet · 05/07/2022 17:16

Two different pregnancies, two different hospitals, two big babies.

First hospital bang on with their estimate.

Second hospital predicted 10lbs at 40 weeks, he was born 10lb 12oz at 39+6

A baby is classed as full term at 37 weeks so don’t worry about the gestation.
scans are often wrong and again, don’t worry if you are have a CS

Dilbertian · 05/07/2022 17:28

Not at all. They got all of mine wrong, despite multiple scans.

One of them, they were flapping about "Baby will be between 9 and 19 lbs...you won't be able to birth them naturally...baby will get stuck... do you want your baby to have shoulder distocia?"

Baby was 11lb, slipped out with virtually no damage to me and none to them. The easiest of all of my labours.

🤷🏻‍♀️

vanillarum · 05/07/2022 19:41

I was 14 days over by the time I had emergency section, and my predicted 9lb'er was 7lb 11 oz

Dilbertian · 05/07/2022 19:49

Baby will be between 9 and 19 lbs

There's a typo 😂

Baby will be between 9 and 10 lbs...

BeeYellowMumma · 05/07/2022 19:52

I was told my baby would be about 8lb, out popped a 5lb 8oz teeny tiny baby unexpectedly with no clothes that fit with family running to the shops for something better.

I think the term "How long is a piece of string" fits

floweringpoppies · 05/07/2022 19:53

Mine were wrong- worried baby was small but was nearly 8Lbs. The midwife was shocked at her size as thought she'd be tiny 🤣

BeautifulBirds · 05/07/2022 19:57

Told, based on belly size, a 9lber. She was 9.1 at 40+3

Jojobees · 05/07/2022 19:58

First was way off predicted 11lb + and born a mere 7lb3
second was bang on predicted 8lb 10oz at term and was born at 41 weeks exactly and weight 8lb 13oz

frazzledbutcalm · 05/07/2022 20:02

Not accurate at all!

Baby 1 - I was told was going to be a good 7lb er … he was 5lb 3oz and skinny as a rake
Baby 2 - I was told was small and kept having growth scans, then at 34 weeks they said baby was 6lb so would be 9lb plus at term! … she was 7lb 1oz
Baby 4 - I was told I was measuring 2-3 weeks behind so they were concerned baby was small … he was 8lb 3oz!

NatMoz · 05/07/2022 20:07

I didn't have scans just a tape measure to the tummy but the baby was always 50th percentile until she was born when she was in the 10th at 6lb 11.

Runkle · 05/07/2022 20:11

Mine was off the chart at 38+ from midwives measurements and predicted at 9lbs 9oz at a scan at 39wks. I had excess fluid too. She was born by planned c-section at 39+3 weighing 9lbs 1oz. They were right about how long she was too but I could tell that from feeling bump.

romdowa · 05/07/2022 20:13

I was told baby would be around 7 and a half pounds . He was 6 11. The sonographer themselves will even tell you that there is a degree of error in the scans. No scan is 100% accurate

scrivette · 05/07/2022 20:13

Told DC1 would be big, a very little looking 7lb 4, told DS2 would be big, he was 9lb 11. The night before DC3 was born was told she was already over 9lb but she was 8lb 4.

itsmellslikepopcarn · 05/07/2022 20:15

I’ve only had one child but it was wrong for me. She was predicted to be over 10lbs but she was 8lb 13 and very tall.

Fearnecuptea · 05/07/2022 20:17

I was told from second trimester onwards I would have a big baby... I had my son at 38 weeks weighing in at 5 pounds 2 haha

girlmom21 · 05/07/2022 20:19

Mine were way off both times

NotLongToGoooo · 05/07/2022 20:20

Oh so really mixed experiences then!
It'll be interesting to see if these measurements are accurate next week. They said they might move the section forward but have now said they feel ok leaving it until next week.

My second was predicted to be 8.5lbs on a growth scan 3 days before I delivered. She was 5lbs 13

Rainbowbaby13 · 05/07/2022 20:20

I was told my son would be around 7lbs at a scan 3 weeks before my c-section but he was actually 5lb 2 so I wouldn't read too much in to it

NotLongToGoooo · 05/07/2022 20:22

I also hope her newborn baby clothes will fit her as we have so many and they're absolutely adorable!
But the consultant said she doubts they will fit..!!

I had a growth scan and my DC was estimated at 10lb 6 he ended up 11lb 4
