Accidentally ate out of date cheddar!

Hi there

pregnant with first baby and was cutting up some extra Mature cheddar for dinner and since I only bought it a few weeks ago I didn’t even bother to check the date. I ate a few pieces and then randomly noticed it was best before June 18 🙈 assume me and baby will be okay? Scared of listeria now 🙈 cheese looked ok and the few bits I ate tasted normal - sorry probably being paranoid!

thank you!

It will be absolutely fine. Best by dates on cheese are ridiculous anyway. It’s cheese (off, processed milk). You won’t get listeria.

It'll be fine. I assume there was no visible mould

Just a tad yes. It's fine Op. Foods don't watch the clock to go off. Wish they would ban use by dates.

I'm assuming it wasn't covered in green mould?! 🤣🤣

You'll be fine. If I paid attention to best before dates on cheese that looked fine, I'd be chucking cheese out every week.

Cheddar doesn’t have/get/grow listeria. This can be found out via google.

Do you have any idea how long cheese is matured for? You'll most likely be fine. Listeria is only really a problem on soft unpasteurised products (and washed salad leaves!)

Echoing the above. You and baby are absolutely fine.

I didn't even know cheese had dates. The very nature of what cheese is suggests it's always fine.

Unless there was mould I really wouldn't worry.

Thanks all - can confirm no green mould 🙈 and I know cheese is essentially just off milk - just panicked slightly there!

When I was a student a friend of mine had a part time job on the cheese counter in a supermarket. When the big blocks of cheese started growing mould they just sliced those bits off and kept selling it. So after learning that I've always assumed it's safe to eat hard cheese well past its sell by date!

In my Miriam Stoppard book it only said that that you should not eat fish from poisoned waters. So you will be dandy.

Cheese does not go out of date, it just gets more mature.

You ate vintage cheddar. Totally fine.

I thought you meant June 2018 not June 18th!!! 100% fine.

Does cheddar go out of date? As long as it's not so dry it's all rock hard and cracked or otherwise completely mouldy, I'd hack any older looking bits off and crack on with eating it!
