Elevated blood pressure

My blood pressure in pregnancy, as measured at my doctor's, has been consistently 120-135/70-88. Apparently this is elevated, although my doctor doesn't seem to this it's a problem. I had my blood pressure tested elsewhere in early pregnancy and it was 110/70.

I've read elevated blood pressure increases the risk of stillbirth. I'm a bit worried about this, but my doctor doesn't seem to be at all. What readings do other people get? I also wondered if my reading was higher in the doctor's clinic.

Hey OP,if you are worried do go back and ask your doctor to tell you why they are not worried and talk to them about why you are, it's important to be informed!

I have had something similar (usually v low blood pressure but had a 120 reading which is high for me) and my midwife said that they're not worried unless it is 140+

Higher blood pressure readings in more stressful settings are normal too. Have you tried doing some deep breathing before they take it to relax you?

CycleGirl20 · 01/07/2022 09:23

Mine was the same with the only worrying about 140+ thing. I'm tempted to buy my own monitor. I did also wonder what other people's readings are like in a clinical setting so interesting yours was higher too.

Anything over 140/90 is high and will be looked at, below that they don't worry and there isn't a risk, plus being at doctors or hospital etc can cause a rise in blood pressure compared to it being taken at home, those numbers wouldn't worry me

IncredibleSulk · 01/07/2022 09:40

140/90 is the range usually used. Did they use a manual or electronic machine as that can make a difference?

Garman · 01/07/2022 09:49

That's still within normal range, 2 or more readings of 140/90+ in a row are high BP. White coat syndrome, lots of people have higher readings with it, I did after birth trauma involving pre eclampsia.

Those are normal readings don't worry. They don't look at treating it til it's consistently over 140/90. Mine is usually 148/75 in antenatal clinics and the midwives panic but the consultant allows me to take it at home which shows I have normal readings. I'm not medicated

Thanks all. That's really reassuring! I think I'm slightly surprised to have made it to 35 weeks and now a little paranoid at what might go wrong here, so I pick up on these things at the doctor's. It's hard not to worry about a lot of things when you're pregnant 😅

It’s in the normal range but depending on your booking BP, your midwife should be monitoring it
