Baby shook repeatedly in womb 38 weeks pregnant

I was just laying down and I felt my baby shiver frantically for about 3 seconds. She hasn’t done it since.

it was like a spasm type of movement.
has anybody else experienced this? and has the baby been okay since being born or did they suffer from infantile spasms/seizures?

Has she kicked since? May be worth ringing the hospital to ask if you should go in.

My DS did that a few times towards the end of my pregnancy too. I never found out what it was but he's now a healthy 16 month old with no health issues at all!

DottieDe · 29/06/2022 17:53

Are you sure it wasn't a Braxton Hicks contraction?

Spottybutterfly · 29/06/2022 19:09

I got shaking early on in the pregnancy around weeks 16-20. When I looked in to it it can be their immature nervous system or trying to shake the cord off them.

Have you had movement since?

SharpLily · 29/06/2022 19:12

Get it checked. Mine did this a couple of times one night, also at 38 weeks. The next day they rushed her out with an emergency C-section. She had the cord around her neck a few times.

SharpLily · 29/06/2022 19:12

BTW she was absolutely fine, but I was right to to check it out.

I've seen many, many threads about this over the years. Search "baby shaking" on the search facility to read threads. I don't know if it's ever been explained but it's really common.

wibblewobbleball · 29/06/2022 19:15

Movements outside of your baby's normal pattern, such as this, should always be checked out. Please call the maternity line on the front of your notes as you need to be seen for a trace, don't call your own midwife as you might wait some time to hear back.

SailingNotSurfing · 29/06/2022 19:15

Get it checked out. Anything unusual in late pregnancy needs a professional opinion. I'm sure the baby is fine but for your own peace of mind, contact your midwife or nearest hospital for advice.

Photosymphysis · 29/06/2022 19:19

My DS1 did this.
It turned out that when he got excited he would shake his fists. Did it for the first couple of years, and then grew out of it.

I did mention it to the midwife and was completely dismissed. This was about 12 years ago though, so maybe things have changed

Happytap · 29/06/2022 19:26

I’d get it checked but both of my healthy babies did this a few times and scared the life out of me

Mariposista · 29/06/2022 19:36

I was thinking this, could it perhaps be your uterus shaking rather than the baby? Mention it to your midwife or doctor for reassurance.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 29/06/2022 20:17

Phone triage as soon as you can to get checked.

ohidoliketobe · 29/06/2022 20:44

Just another one echoing - get any changes in movement checked out. They'd rather see you and there be no issue than not see you at all. Good luck op

Dyra · 29/06/2022 20:49

Hopefully you've gotten checked out for piece of mind. But as reassurance, DC1 did this multiple times. Plenty of theories were bandied about (quivering after a good stretch, brain test firing), but nothing definite was determined.

DC1 is approaching 3 now. No spasms or seizures as an infant or toddler. Just seems to be (mostly) a weirdly uncommon thing babies do that no-one knows why.

heartbroken22 · 29/06/2022 20:51

I'd contact the pregnancy unit at your hospital and get checked out.
