Myermay, I would imagine that it would be administered in the same sort of way that maternity allowance is (ie what self-employed mums-to-be claim instead of maternity pay) ie, through the Department for Work & Pensions (their website ) but am not sure. It would also depend on whether he is a sole trader, a partner or a limited company - if the latter then he is technically an employee, so he would have to 'pay himself' as an employee. I'm not sure but I would check with the DWP or your local beneifts agency office.

I thought the current law was that companies had to give two weeks paternity leave, but that it did not have to be paid.

So, I would think think that since it's his company he could just not show up and opt not to be paid... I believe this is to be a campaign issue and may be changing, but not in time for a May/June baby.
