I'm 14ish weeks, and everyone keeps asking me if I've got a nickname for the baby yet.

This is my first successful (so far) pregnancy and I didn't realise this was a thing... I've just been calling it 'the baby'. But I can see that a nickname is quite cute, and might help me bond with the baby before it's here (I still think it's quite early for that though).

I've tried out a few things but nothing seems quite right - what have other people called the baby before it gets here?

We called ours 'the worm' for the duration, because we didn't find out the gender people would just ask me 'how's the worm' 🤣🤣

WhaWhaWhaaat · 27/06/2022 09:59

Mine were the prawns.

But DD was 'the leech' because she drained me so much 😂

Radrose · 27/06/2022 10:23

Not sure if it makes you feel any better. I'm 30 weeks now, and we've just referred to it as the baby in public, and in private by name once we found out the gender.

My parents insist on calling it Jellybean, which really irks me for some reason, but I wouldn't say it to them as they don't mean any harm by it. We've kept the gender to ourselves, so calling it by name feels lovely between the two of us.

Garman · 27/06/2022 10:24

We didn't call it anything, it's not a requirement if you don't want to. The cutesy names are so strange.

OurChristmasMiracle · 27/06/2022 10:26

Each pregnancy has had a nickname for me, currently 14 weeks and baby is smidge because they literally looked like a smidge at the 5 week scan!

my son was simply bump (partly because I carry big!)

moomoose · 27/06/2022 11:14

Ah yes @Radrose, that's familiar! My parents insist on calling it sproglet, which I find intensely irritating, but I know it's coming from a good place so I'm trying not to let it wind me up 😂

I couldn't stomach a nickname for the baby. It would be as if their smallness somehow meant they were less human or real. So I just called them "the baby", simples.

Danikm151 · 27/06/2022 11:26

I called my son pop pop as soon as I felt movements as that what it felt like. I still call him Poppop now sometimes.
before that he was the raspberry

Jaaxe · 27/06/2022 11:26

Never had any nicknames for mine when pregnant and we’re on baby number 4, found it a bit cringe I guess but that’s just me x

moomoose · 27/06/2022 11:29

@Danikm151 maybe I'll feel more like it when I can feel the baby move then :-) When did you first start to feel movements?

Beware OP... I still call my 16 month old DD "bean"😂

BrightOrion · 27/06/2022 13:06

congratulations on your pregnancy 🥰

I like to say wotsit because that’s what she looked like early on! But I also say she’s slugging about because the movements sometimes feel like there’s a giant slug in my stomach 😅 I’m 36 weeks now.

Just "the baby". Silly nicknames like peanut and bean are so twee.

This.

houseofboy · 27/06/2022 13:18

First was bean and second was pea.

motherofawhirlwind · 27/06/2022 13:24

George, after the Bugs Bunny episode with the Abominal Snowman.

Twizbe · 27/06/2022 13:26

We just used baby.

We didn't know the sex for either baby so had no names fixed either.

My mum called them Snowdrop and Snowdrop 2 as they were both due in Jan.

moomoose · 27/06/2022 13:46

Someone I used to work with used 'bean' as a middle name because it's what she called her daughter before she was born. It's only just occurred to me that's probably why Frances Cobain has the same middle name... My work friend isn't Courtney Love, but I suspect she might have aspirations 😂

Nicknames are cringey. I've never come across one that didn't make me eye roll. And I've heard a lot of them... jellybean, bean, bubba 🤢 one called it panda (changed for privacy) because the fetus 'looked like one' at their 6 week scan and now everything is pandas 3 years later. Kid has had this theme forced on them from before birth.

My dd referred to dc2 as 'my little sister' for a good 5 months of my pregnancy and was greeted with a little brother when he arrived. We just called them both 'the baby', some friends used 'baby ourname'.

vegang · 27/06/2022 13:53

DD was called bean when I was pregnant and we still call her that now she's a toddler. I can't remember why, I think she was the size of a bean at an early scan and it stuck

Pollywoddles · 27/06/2022 15:28

Mine was Pip because when we came out of the scan at 7 weeks my husband asked what size the foetus was and I said the size of a pip.

We had an NIPT at 11 weeks so we knew what we are having and named her soon after so then we just called her by her name. My work colleagues had their own very cute nickname for her and still call her by it 😊

You’re right, apparently she looked like a kidney bean on the scan hence the name.

wotsitsaremyfave · 27/06/2022 15:40

Didn't know this was a thing

I didn't know sex and didn't have a name picked out. I didn't have a nickname either

I bonded ok with my child once born though

NashvilleQueen · 27/06/2022 18:18
